Opinions please!!!
« on: November 22, 2010, 06:23:32 PM »
I met this guy last year who also is into archery and hunting. This fall when I got back from deployment I got a hold of him to see how he was doing.  He tells me he got permission to hunt on this nice little piece of property and that he is now considered a "disabled" hunter because of his health issues. I think he has some heart problems and I know he gets out of breath really easy.  I already have a spot to hunt but I offer to help him put his stand and do some of his grunt work to help him out.  He tells me he just wants meat in his freezer and tells me I should hunt with him and can shoot whatever (late archery).  I CAN ONLY HUNT THERE THOUGH IF I AM WITH HIM. I already have my son's deer in the freezer so I kind of want to wait for a buck.  Well, we decide to put up a tree stand for him and one for me over the same spot.  I do it all pretty much by myself.  We put a trailcam up and get some pics of some decent bucks (atleast in my opinion) and one big old guy.  His mind changes from meat in the freezer and he says I can take anything but that big old guy.  Fair enough.  I continue to help with the grunt work mainly because he's a nice enough guy and I know he could use the help and it's nice to have a fellow hunter to BS with.  Now I'm torn between my spot and his because I also have some decent bucks coming in.  So today it starts snowing and I call him and tell him let's go throw some apples out at his spot because they will be out looking for food.  We go check his cam and there is a really nice fork horn on cam about an hour before we get there.  I say "So you think you'll let me take this guy if he comes in?"  He says nothing for a couple of minutes and then says "I'm going to shoot the first nice buck that comes in."  So now I feel like if I hunt with him and he shoots a buck, I'll be gutting it, dragging it, hanging it, and who knows what else, and then he is going to be done hunting and I'll be up in my spot anyway with days lost.  I'm trying not to be selfish but, I'm also trying to not get screwed around. Every time I mention hunting my spot he says I should hunt at his spot with him.  I'm looking for some opinions.  What should I do?

Personally I would be selfish. Especially during the rut,  maybe if he doesn't have anything and you haven't seen much at your other spot you could go with him the last week or something. I won't hunt somewhere where someone tells me what I can and can't shoot.

You know it sounds to me like he just wants you to help him out & since you can only hunt when he is with you, you would be all done at that spot. From your story he needs someone to help him cause he cant do it on his own or it is just easier with you. I say cut the bulshi- & go get your buck. He sounds to wishy washy for me... :twocents:

Sounds like you have a good hart in helping this guy out.

If I was in your shoes, I would probably give hima day or too to take a buck and then head out on my own. I would make sure he knows I am there to help him, but also have my own tag to fill. If he wanted more help after i filled mine, then I would be more then happy to help.

Make him a deal.  You'll hunt with him as much as he wants and do the processing of his harvest as long as you get to take the first one.  If you get the only one, you split your kill with him 50/50.  If he's sincere about liking to hunt with you, he should be ok with it.  If he's just using you to do the work and then plans on bailing on you after he gets his, he'll probably not like the deal and you're better off hunting your own spot.

He is letting you hunt on his property...Who knows, he might shoot the fork horn, and you might get the monster??? But if it gets any worse, definatly let him know you are there to fill a tag as well.

Give him your number and have him call when he gets one down. It's great that you are willing to help him out, and he probably deserves it if he has led an honest life. If you got good animals in your spot use it. It's not like you have bailed on him with all the help you have already given.

here is the reason i would need to never do anything for a guy like this..
go and get your own spots let people like that do their own hunting you should be able to kil any animal any time
unless yor hunting a lease and trying to manage your bucks..good hnting partners dont come around very often
take your kids hunting
