Where to put spare oar drift boat
« on: November 23, 2010, 08:15:44 PM »
I just bought a new drift boat and need to know where you guys usually put your spare oar in the boat? Also do you just tie your fish off the side of the boat or do you bring a cooler?

I have my spare, POS oar that slides underneath the rower's seat and takes up a lot of otherwise useable room.  I wouldnt secure the oar with anything that cannot be removed in under a couple seconds.  I broke an oar a couple months ago on a 90 degree bend with big rocks on the inside, fast water...just all in all a bad situation (the oar that came with the boat was rotten), luckily I was able to immediately grab the spare oar and get us away from the far bank...had it been secured, no telling what would have happened.

Wherever you find a place for it, make sure it is readily accessible.

I have never broken an oar in all my time on the water just the blade/ and on most good oar's you can replace the blade, so I carry a spare set of blades.
Work sucks!!!! I should be shed hunting

I tuck my spare oar under the rowers seat sticking out the back so it is easily accessible.  The fish ( however rare) go in the fish box under the seat with wet burlap or ice over it depending on the season.

I've never broken an oar, but did have one come out of the oar lock and fall overboard (shallow water, messing with the net or something)  Luckily I had the spare ready.  I kept mine on the floor under the seat.  It was a little bit of a drill to get the spare out and put into action.  Luckily I was in fairly smooth water.  After that incident, I learned to keep the oars out of the water (in the shallows) unless I had my hands on them.
Nothing witty here.... move along.

Usually i only take a spare break down oar, but when I hit big water the full size spare goes wherever it fits that is most out of the way...as far as fish, I have a fish box/cooler right behind the rowers seat.. if not i'd go with a cooler..but..if you want to show your catch on a short float..hang them over the side proudly!!! Good luck! Can't beat a driftboat!

We have a break down spare oar that we keep on the floor near the rower. You want that thing easily accessible!! Good thing our clackcraft has plenty of space.
