bolt action 223 or 22-250 for yotes and bobcats
« on: November 28, 2010, 10:50:07 AM »
i was looking for a 223 or 22-250 for yotes and bobcats to use during the winter for hunting. i was looking at the savage and remington with the bull barrel. which gun do you think is more accurate. usually shoot remington never tried a savage. just looking for input on which to buy. i know the tikkas are good just looking for some others to look at. thanks

I have a remington 700 bull 22-250 and its a tack driver. the 22-250 is the better round of the two. That is what i would buy, if looking at a bolt action.

What's better an apple or an orange?  A hammer or screw driver?  A .223 or 22-250 will kill a yote or bobcat everytime.  Decide which gun you like and buy it in the caliber you want.

But if you want my opinion I would go with the .223.  Lot cheaper ammo.

I agree unless your hunting wide open spaces and plan on shooting beyond 300 yards the .223 is all the rifle you need.

Boy that was the quickest decision i have ever seen :chuckle: 1 post and you make up your mind :chuckle: 22-250 ammo is just as easy to find as 223. Almost every store has both. the 223 is cheaper to shoot. i have 3-223 and 1-22-250 if you aren't shooting more then several hundred rounds a year. the ammo price difference is not to much between the two of them. under about 300 yards both will do just fine a 223 at over 300 yards is pushing it a little. i have shot a few over 300 yards with mine. i have had about half of them get back up and take off. the 22-250 at 300+ = stone dead :chuckle:

I have a Remington model 700 SPS Varmint with the 26" heavy barrel. Only think I have had done with it is a barrel break in and trigger set at 2Ibs. I have a Burris Signature Series 8x32x44mm with the Ballistic Mil-Dot. Handload is 25.5grs. of Benchmark powder and a Nosler 50gr. bt. using CCI 400 small rifle primer. Very accurate and pleasant to shoot.
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr.

I would go 22-250 myself. I would also get a howa weatherby or savage too. The rem just doesnt do it for me, the sps is heavy as heck and the stock sucks something bad. For that money the other three brands are far better made :twocents:

I like both cartridges but what one will do at reasonable range (500 yards and under) so will the other. The difference between them in 300 yard velocity is 300fps at the highest and in heavier bullets it's 200fps or less, 223 also has more common loadings with heavier bullets as well as costing less than half as much to shoot.

As for rifle choice? I like the Savage myself, very accurate and the Accu-trigger makes them easy to shoot and at a much lower cost than the Remington rifles. Shoot both if you can, definitely handle both and make your decision from there.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Unless your going to be shooting near the vehicle or are a very strong person I'd really look hrd at a standard wieght barrel, they are just as accurate and alot easier to carry and change positions if a coyote comes in from a unplanned direction.  If your calling coyotes verses just shooting at targets of oppertunity I'd look at lower powerred scopes with large FOV's  I do just fine in most of the country I hunt WA, MT ,ND, MN and WI with scopes in the 1x4 to 1.5x6 range. In places with open grasslands run a 2.5x10 and that's the only place the 22-250 comes out.  All the rest of my rifles are wild cats bases on the 223 or 222 Rem Mag.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

why in heavens name would you want a bull barreled rifle for calling coyotes? Your going to get one shot maybe two if your lucky so there are no worries about heating up a barrel .
A bull barrel isn't going to be any more accurate then a lighter weight rifle .
although alot of guys have been told they will be by dumb ars salesmen behind the gun counter that don't know what they are talking about. :bash:
for a calling rifle you need light weight and sompthing that will come up and swing FAST .
best bang for the buck is a savage , look at all the extras you get with a savage and do the math , its a great bargain , and i know of none that are not tack drivers out of the box.another great choice would be the stevens.
223 would be my choice unless you plan on calling in Wyoming  :chuckle:. If you cant  call a coyote closer then 300 yrds , well your not much of a caller , and should probably stick to deer and elk .The 223 is going to be much cheaper to shoot and your going to need alot of time behind the trigger ( practice) if your going to be a coyote caller , it happens fast and you will not have a minute to acquire your target, it will be seconds, they are nervous animals and don't stay put long if everything doesn't feel right .
scope choice is important most guys go way to big on power , a 1.5 x5 or a 2x7 is a great calling scope as it affords you a huge field of view . I personally use a 3x9 but i have developed a muscle memory that puts the X hairs  where i need them when i bring the rifle up . Sorry if this sounds rude but i tell it like it is , been at this game for a while and i know what works, and have seen many spend money on the wrong equipment . that to me would be more of a slap in the face then this post . Best of luck with your choices, and welcome to the world of predator calling it aint for everyone.

223 has inherit accuracy over the 22-250, is cheaper to shoot, is loaded with heavier bullets and its easier to find a factory rifle with a fast enough twist rate to stabalize heavier bullets. Plus there is tons of inexpensive ammo for hunting and practice.
You don't need a flatter shooting rifle or a larger caliber. What you need is good field marksmanship. Jeff Cooper.

I have both and would choose the 22-250. Premium ammo is almost the same cost. I would not recommend surplus 223 fmj ammo on coyotes.  I have a Ruger that I really like, very light and fast swinging rifle. My uncle has a Savage that really shoots well. :twocents:
