Lincoln Deer Down
« on: November 28, 2010, 10:45:48 PM »
Second day of my late hunt I connected with this doe using my Knight BigHorn. Day 1, we spent our time looking for sign after jumping a doe and fawn just after 8 am walking a green dotted area. After hiking through the snow up high and the muddy roads down low we decided to focus our efforts in the lower elevations for the rest of our hunt. Day 2, we started in a behind a red dotted gated (walking in hunting only) hiking a logging road on the edge of old growth and a clear cut. The hike took us down hill along the west and south edges, ending in the southeast corner of the old growth and the clear cut seeing old sign long way. We wanted to hit all four corners of this clear cut, doing so we choose to head back up hill taking a very wet and muddy road that would put us in the northeast corner coming from the central part of the clear cut running along a little gully and stream. Slipping our way up the hill with heavy boots we found ourselves one-fourth of the way from the top when two average sized does and a fawn jump up at my 10 o'clock and make a quick jump down into the gully we have been watching. From this point until the deer went down happend in no more than 10 seconds. In step with the deer I make a quick move to the edge of the road and get into a kneeing shooting position. Just as my knee hits the ground the first doe pops up on the other side of the gully and keeps climbing. Next, the fawn and second doe come over the ridge just as my BigHorn comes into position with my shoulder, the fawn stops her jump up the hill and takes a glance in my direction stopping the doe behind her. Just as the second doe begins to turn her head I put my sight on the top half of her back, take a deep breath and pull the trigger, sending my 310 gr bullet 60 yards hitting the doe causing her to spin and drop. Three years later or 12 actual days of hunting in the field and I take my first deer, a muzzleloader deer. Couldn't have shared the hunt with a better person than my dad, thanks dad.

Looks very tasty, I think I still see milk on its lips.  :chuckle:
