do you use decoys

just wonder if anyone on here uses decoys and do they work well.

I do - I use a rabbit decoy. I dont remember the name but I got it at Bass Pro for like $25. Oh its called the Quiver Critter and I swear by it! It is a furry little battery operated rabbit that you stake in the ground and it wiggles around. The coyotes are so mezmerized by it they completely focus on it and dont even notice me. All of them come in and bee line right to it. I had one come in from the side and bust me and take off into the woods but it could not take its eyes off of Ol Thumper. Its stood just beyond the treeline about 100yds out staring at the decoy and finally came slinking back in - like maybe really only 2-3 minutes after it ran off but it seems longer when you are sitting there. But it just was so interested by the decoy it had to come back in - bad idea. And I was thinking - I TRICKED YOU I TRICKED YOU heheheh  Now I dont hunt without it. I'm also gonna buy one of those Montana Decoy Fawnzy decoys for larger wide open areas since the rabbit is so small. But its even worked in E Wa when I called in a dog from like over a 1/2 mile away. (just a guess but it was a lonnnnng way out there)

I rarely use decoys for coyotes.  I find it is fairly difficult, in most situations in Eastern Washington, to place the decoy in an area that it can be seen by an incoming coyote, without exposing yourself unneccesarily.  

However, if you can do it, they are helpful.  I like the MOJO critter because it is so easy on batteries.

The coyote decoys I would not use on public land, just because of the safety issues.  I have used them with success during the breeding season when howling.  I have never tried them Sept-December because I figured I would scare off more pups than I would call in adults.  They are bulky and a pain in the ass to transport.

By safety you mean people shooting at your decoy, like in deer season? I never thought about one. My rabbit decoy is small and crams in my backpack real easy. And its good on batteries too, 2 AA's and I've only changed them once in 6mos. The fawn decoy I was looking at is just cardboard but it doesnt fold up so it is kinda bulky/awkward. Never thought about the safety factor, very good point.

Sorry, I was speaking about an actual decoy that looks like a coyote.  I wouldn't worry as much about a fawn decoy.

What! wait a min someone told me the mojo critter and other electric decoys are illegal in this state??!! I have a bunch of sweet duck ones too and my buddy from the area said no dice out here. He was deployed for a while, maybe the law changed???

Only illegal for turkey, waterfowl, and deer.  Page 72 of the regs.

Yes, every sence I called in a 25 lb bobcat and it tryed to jump on my foot! I shot that cat at 5 feet right between the eyes with an arrow!
Now I hang up a wad of feathers out away from me about 20 yards.

I have started to use the "quiver critter" I think that's how you spell it I agree with tlbradford, a lot of times i feel like i am going to get busted, just placing the decoy out. In those situations, i just keep it in my pack. I have not done hardly any calling this year. Been so busy with other stuff. Hope to experiment with the decoy a little more.

I have one that I rarely put out.  I think they're more of a hassle than anything and I haven't seen great results.  Like Tlbradford I worry about getting busted before calling.

Mojo critter, which I like (I dont use it all the time, only on occasion). I have the fuzzy rabbit that was stated in the first post, but I like the Mojo as I have used a tri pod to prop it up a bit, out of this western wa brush.

I have a coyote decoy as well, but i havent called anything in with it yet. I have only used it in probably 4 sets however.

Mine got turned on in my pack but I didnt know it and now it barely works.  I think it burned up the motor or something.  The new models have a better guard around the on/off switch. 

The bobcat I called in couple of weeks ago never stopped moving.  I think if I had my decoy out he would have come right in.  I think they are great for bobcats and most coyotes but I did call in a yote that saw the decoy and took off running.  Maybe he had seen one before.
