Pictures of mine requested for publication, any advice?
« on: January 10, 2011, 09:50:58 AM »
So this is new to me...pictures of mine were requested for publication in the 2010 Coulee Corridor Guidebook. The man designing the guidebook said I would receive photo credit. This is all new to me...should I be asking for compensation as well or should I just be happy that I would have photo's published?

Thanks for any advice you have to offer! :)

Swanny, I ask people regularly to use their photos. Here is my take: Yes, a person can ask for compensation, however to get your name out there with some good photography you may want to consider giving the photos for free. Just add a stipulation that the photos must be credited each and every time they are reproduced and cannot be sold. :twocents:

Don't forget to get whatever agreement you come to in writing.

Thanks for the information. I was kind of leaning towards just letting them use them, just haven't been in the situation before so I though I would ask. Thanks for your input!  :)

I have let publications, and currently several scientific texts use my photos just for the photo credit.  It depends if you like gratification getting your photo published or if you are greedy and want cash.    Most of the time if you ask for compensation they will say no thanks.  Remember they can get lots of photos from agencies for not very much.   Enjoy the publication.

Doug, the way you wrote that, you make it sound like someone wanting cash for a photo is greediness.   It is not.  Would you go to your job for free?  Would you work for a few days without pay?
If you decided you didn't need one of your rifles anymore, would you put a classified ad up that says, "rifle up for grabs - FREE", or would you try to sell it, and get some money in return?

Someone wanting to get paid for the work they do is not greediness.

Someone wanting to sell a car, rifle, boat, etc - for money - is not greediness.

Someone wanting to get paid for use of a photo is not greedy, either.

Here is a link on an excellent discussion that shows why giving photos away for free use is not always a good idea:

This discussion in the link above shows that we should not always think only ourselves, but we should also consider how our actions affect others.  It's common courtesy to do so.
