One of the Tred Barta shows he hunted bear from a boat. If I remember right it was more of a scout and put in where you saw something type of thing. Not the "luxury" that you are planning. Looking at some of the bears they were seeing along the shoreline I think that may be the way to go.

I have not but have read quite a few articles regarding hunting Kodiak blacktails and blackies off a boat. Looks like a great adventure and really quite resonable on pricicng once you look at everything. Are you looking at a particular outfitter? Link?

No particular outfitter yet...if you google homer bear hunting you will see a few options.
I heard that you see multiple bears a day, all spot and stalk, and at night you eat halibut and king crab and live like a king!! maybe dancing girls???

I think there was a little write up by one of the editors of the online version of F&S or OL. One thing you may want to keep in mind is I think you have to hunt in pairs for grizz safety. They do love a fresh gut pile. If you are booking/hunting with a buddy no big deal but you don't want to be one of the horror stories of having to hunt in pairs and getting paired up with somebody that you don't work well with. I would be interested to hear more as you search for and book a hunt. Having taken my father on a guided mule deer hunt (Tanglewood Guides, Omak Wa, Call Oren Jensen shameless plug) and being completely satisfied I can tell you that meshing with the outfitter and how they would "fit" you needs is very important.

I saw a show the other day, they used black umbrellas as camouflage for getting closer to the bears, guess the bear thinks it's just another bear. Would like to do one of these sometime.

My brother lives in Craig,AK and we go up there for spring and fall bear season's. Lots of very large bears taken in spring and some in fall. I fleshed and dried 61 last year over 6 foot and 14 over 7 foot (I run a skinning and fleshing outfit during season ) Prince of Wales Island has the largest concentration of black bears per capita of any other area up there. The boat guides are pricey but have a very good kill ratio.

What you are asking for, and what Sumpnneedskillin is talking about specifically is:
Wild Alaska Cruises :
http://wildalaskacruises.com/
I went twice last year, once in May for black bear and back in September. They are "A" class accomodations, second to none outfitter in Alaska. I know the Owner, Capt. Larry Larson and I am already booking my trip for next year.
Black Bear is self guided however, but there will be MANY opportunities.. tougher albeit to get close with a long bow, BUT Larry has many clients that get their bear with a bow.
.. worth EVERY Penny!

This is the one my buddy is looking at.... I dont have a bunch of say in the situation, was just invited along with him and some other buddies... If I found a bunch of negative info about it though, i'd let him know...
Thanks all!

Last year at the sportsman show I talked to a guide out of Valdez. It was $400 a day and you could either DIY bear hunt or stay onboard and fish for giant lings and halibut. Sounded like a blast and laid back. Accomidations were good but not fancy. I'd like to try it this next spring/summer.
