Looking for youth .243?

Looking for youth .243 to get nieces and nephews on the right track of life.New or used looking towards a break action single shot. Any and all info is much help. Thanks ahead of time!!!

look at the Rossi break with three barrels package. you can get it in 22 rimfire, 20 gauge scatter gun and 243. they have a safety on the side so is nice to learn with. using the same stock for all three is also nice 'cause they'll be shooting clays or wingshooting with same gun used for big-game. an old saying I haven't heard in a while "beware of the man with 1 gun, he knows it well."

I'd go with another cartridge.  Nothing wrong with 243 but I know new hunters that have been turned away by bad experiences with light bullets wounding game.  Also, if they take to it and want to hunt something bigger one day, say an elk or bear, you won't have to go find another gun or loan them one of yours.  I recommend the .260 rem or the 7mm-08.  Both are moderate on recoil and there are a few guns in the ecomomy line that won't kill the wallet, especially in 7mm-08.

Me, my brother and my wife. Have all taken our first bucks with a HR handi rifle, in 243. It has always been a great shooter. It is a little heavy but that also helps with the recoil as well. If you are not dead set on the 243. I also like the 7mm-08 and it is great cal, with more bullet choices. Mild recoil and better knock down power.

I completely agree with Gadwall, .243 is a cartridge better left to experienced hunters.  As we speak, I'm buying 7mm-08 rifles for my three boys.  7mm-08 will handle anything from coyotes to Elk when the right design and weight of bullets are used.  Light loads will be used for practice, gradually working them up to the heavier loads for deer/elk hunting.  .260 Remington was my 2nd choice (7mm-08 is more common).

My 8 year old starting out with a 30-06.  Yep - that's correct.  With some of the very mild ammunition available today, the recoil of a 30-06 can match that of a 243.   As he grows older, he can shoot hotter ammunition if he chooses and needs to.  (His older fellow (me) loves the mild stuff also!)
