Wanttohuntmore, Josh & others thank you for all the information. Let's not let this thread die. I'd like to see more information on all fly fishing: single hand, Spey, switch.

The more we can read about it from folks that do it the better for all of us to draw conclusions.

I stuck this here so we don't have to search around or repeat ourselves.

hey thanks for all the great info... it helps alot having people who acctually know what they are talking about to get info from vs joe schmoe who works part time in the fishing department at the baitshop

Jeepster, the Deer Creek's by TFO (designed by Mike Kinney and RB Meiser, are AWESOME rods for the money, especially the 13' 7/8 with a 550 skagit line).  They are $350, but once you buy a line ($75), tips ($60 for 3), reel ($100 or more), and backing ($10), you'll be at close to $700.  You can do this much cheaper, like I mentioned, but it takes some know how, and you'll want to upgrade soon.  I could set up a spey package for under $200, but it'd take about 8 hrs of work to build it, and you'd have some frankenstein type line.  Those TFO rods are nice, warranty, etc...  There's a few nice ones out there that match the quality of the TFO, in that price range, Echo comes to mind.  I feel the addiction pulling right now.  Must walk away :)

ive been after a TFO for a while...

when i was out in Winthrop scouting deer (more like finding the most remote area i could find-- say no to combat hunting) earlier this year, we were campin on a small lake in the hills and i always make the rounds to the local flyshops in the area, and there is this one shop there (cant remember the name) but they wrap one-off TFO rods, they had every color pattern immaginable, in any size/weight rod ranging from the UW purple and gold to rastafarian black green gold and red... they sell the kits, corks of every size and color, the thread, guides, EVERYTHING.... they have a guy wrapping rods on site, and if you tell him what you want, you will have a custom TFO a month later... since then ive been wanting to build a rod... not sure if they make a spey, or a double hander, of if it would even be the appropriate rod to build myself, but it would be fun, thats also where i learned about TFO.... ive casted a 7wt and i was amazed...

like i said, its going to be a while before i can afford anything.... got a trial run on a comercial boat sunday, so hopefully i will have work thru the winter crabbin/gillnetting....

just got an el-cheapo kufa 8wt, okuma seirra 8/9, line, backing, damn near set me back 200 bucks... thats gonna have to do for now....

by the way,

MIKE KENNEY offers SPEY/DOUBLEHANDED CLASSES every first and third saturday, and every seccond and fourth sunday of the month at the BLUE STILLY PARK in arlington wa as available,

he also works at HOOK LINE AND SINKER in arlington, after his classes, it is located right off of the arlingtong exit in the smokey point drive plaza... its a great shop that offers everything from rod building gear to salt water gear to any color corkie desired.... found this out today as i was driving through....

from what i was told, no question about spey, doublehand, or fly fishing goes unanswered, whether it be about line selection, or how to present a fly into the smallest hole...

mike kenney has his companys name on the TFO Deer Creek Outfitters line of rods, so he is the real deal, if you wish to get information from a North West LEGEND, this is the place to be.... from what i was told, he offers rods to try out, lines to cast, and EXPERT advice to all who seek it....

just thought id toss that out there

Just remember guys. It is not all about casting a long distance. Spey rods are great for swinging flies and great for mending line. The biggest problem that I see is that spey casters will sometimes be having so much fun casting long distances that they forget to actually fish to where the fish are. Just because you can cast 140 feet doesn't mean that you should launch one every time you cast. More often than not a forty or fifty footer is all you need.
