Swapping-Out Savage Barrels
« on: December 23, 2010, 02:18:36 PM »
I was considering picking up a Shaw barrel kit for my Savage .243... maybe .358 Win.  How difficult is it to swap the barrels out?  Other than a vice and what come in the kit (barrel, wrench, headspace gauge), what else will I need? What's the process for head-spacing?

Thanks.

Not much more than that.
This site is a great resource for Savage rifles.

You may want to soak the threads with some sort of penetrating oil for a while to make things easier. If it's blued steel they can be pretty tough to get off.

I made a video of a barrel swap that's up on youtube. If you search for yorketransport or Savage barrel swap it should come up. I'll post a link when I get home.

Here is a good article. http://www.varminter.com/particles/poorman2.htm

Definitely check out Savage shooters also.  They want a subscription fee now for the best parts of their forum but worth it.  The classifieds there are a great place to find barrels.  I put together a 25-06 on an old 110 my brother gave me for less than $300 including a scope.
