A Season to Remember
« on: December 23, 2010, 08:19:24 PM »
I always look forward to elk season camping out with a life long friend and enjoying the outdoors.  This year was special.  My friend harvested his first elk (cow) on the second day of the season.  I was content with how the season started and looked forward to hunting the whole season whether I harvested an elk or not.

The third day I hunted and found where a small heard had gone into a big canyon.  I called and listened that evening along the edge of the canyon with no replies.

The fourth day we planned on packing up camp after I hunted the early morning.  I was planning on hunting the rest of the season in a few different locations to learn some new ground.  Early that morning I made my way in to a location where I knew the elk might travel through on there way back to bedding areas.  I sat and listened for about an hour, then heard a few elk coming.  I watched a cow and calf walk by me, then I saw another cow coming with another elk behind her.  I caught a glimpse of a main beam of a bull as he followed the cow.  He walked within 15 yards and stopped with the boiler room behind a tree.  He then walked behind a large Douglas-fir and I drew my bow.  As he stepped into the small clearing and hesitated and I let the arrow fly.  The bull ran about 10 yards, stopped and looked back.  He then wobbled a little took a few steps towards the cow and then ran downhill angling towards me for approximately 10-12 yards where he went down.  He lay there 10 yards or less from me took a few gasps and then it was over.  I sat there and looked at him in disbelief for a few minutes and admired such a majestic animal.  The rest is history and I thank my friend for a season to never forget and my other friends who came and helped that day.
