savage 116 ss synthetic???
« on: December 26, 2010, 07:47:45 PM »
I just saw at bi-mart a savage 116 ss synthetic with accutrigger and accustock for 539.00. Is this a decent purchase on a GOOD shootin rifle as Im not a synthetic fan. It felt good besides the non cheech rest. Good recoil pad but dont know anything else. Any input is awesome.

Regardless of what anyone says about Savage rifles, I don't think you will get a more accurate out-of-the-box barrel without going to a custom gun.  Got the Accutrigger on my .17 HMR.  It's good.  No experience with the Accustock-good concept.  Stock can be changed if you don't like it.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Most of the synthetic Savage stocks are pretty flimsy, check the fore end. If it doesn't bother you or you can work with it than yes they are good shooters and that is a pretty good price for a SS Savage.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

The most accurate rifle I've owned was an old (pre-accutrigger) 116 in .30'06.  With handloads it would cloverleaf off a sandbag rest at 100 yards.  I also had a 16 in .223 and found it shot well, also.  I'll admit now that I've become a Weatherby snob.  $539 is a fair price for the new 116.  If you're looking for a utilitarian rifle to put meat in a freezer, you won't go wrong with a Savage.

I picked one up in a 270 Win before the holidays.  Went to the range yesterday and shot a 1/2 inch group out of the box at 100 yards.  The rifle is one of the better shooters on the market.  I couldn't be happier.

I'd say that $539 is a pretty good deal.

I'm sort of a Savage nut, but I'll admit that  don't like the Accustock. It's better than the old "tupperware" stocks, but it's also heavier. The aluminum bedding block does make the forend stiffer but the Accu-Wedge thing drives me nuts. I pulled mine out and just bed the action with Devcon like I would any other stock.

I haven't shot any of their newer models but I do know that their barrels are awesome and a few of my friends that shoot the newer ones really like them.
