Cabo Fishing recomendation
« on: January 14, 2011, 01:13:12 PM »
I'm heading down to Cabo the end of next month and thought I'd see if anyone has a charter group down there they've good luck with. Last time I was down I did the Marlin/dorado thing I'm kind of looking for more the panga experince for rooster fish etc.  (And I have a brother going who gets sea sick in a bath tub so I'm leary of going much off shore)  Any recomendations?

I've heard a lot of good things abour RedRum. Personally fished with Cabo Magic and had an acceptable time. Probably would use a different guide service next time. Also, walking around I saw most of the boats run by RedRum, clean, up to date, nice looking boats.

I was just down there in November.  I usually go out of Cabo but decide to go fish out of San Jose.  I highly recommend Gordo Banks Pangas.  It's a short trip to the banks and I caught a ton of fish.  PM me if you want more info.

I went and stayed at a fishing lodge and fished with them the whole time so I can't really suggest a guide, but I can say that the pangas will still get into plenty of Dorado and Roosters are awesome. Your timing is not the best for Roosters but it's really good for Dorado. You might also be able to find some Amberjack, which will pull your arm off. We fished most all of the day for Dorado and Stripes then the last couple hours of the day once the offshore or sportfisher boats were moored up we'd go fish roosters around them. They dump their dead bait over the side and the Roosters come in and feast on them...it's a hoot. I caught a 58# bull dorado off of a panga there. We were about 40 miles north of Cabo.
This is the place we stayed at.

I've used Redrum before they were expensive, not very personable and I didn't catch very many fish.  Last time I used Gaviota's, they were less money, very friendly and I caught alot more fish, we actually had the most fish flags on our boat when we came into port at the end of the day.  As far as the boats themselves they were pretty much identical.  That's my experience.  I know I read alot of good reviews about Redrum before my first trip and that's why I booked them, so apparently they do something right, maybe I just caught them on an off day.

I did the panga trip out of Cabo last May and it was a blast. I still have the guide info. I talked 'em into just under $250 including license and bait. I did mostly rooster fish and amber jack. Knocked 'em dead. Their gear wasn't that great, heavy rods and line. I would take your own salmon gear and hoochies. That would have made it even funner on lighter gear. I will try to remember to post their info tomorrow.

Thanks for the recomends-I'll chedck these places out on line.  I've fished enough places that I know it's kind of unfair to judge a guide or charter strictly on whether you catch fish or not.  I like to feel like I've had maximum effort on a boat that was in good condition wth a skipper and/or mate that made the trip pleasurable. Looking outside today, just a day in the warm sun with  a line in the water would make me happy!!!
Thanks again!
