What gun do I get??
« on: January 08, 2011, 04:09:43 PM »
Okay so I want a gun to shoot small game with such as coyotes, bobcats or coons for example. I am tired of packing around my .270 everywhere and want something with cheaper ammo.  I have been looking at a .223 but I've also looked at a 17hmr. I don't want to spend over $400. Would like a gun/scope combo. Don't know what do go with? Any help??
Sorry about my stupid profile name. Made it when I was a high school idiot.

You're asking for two guns.. maybe...  As the rimfire is fine for coons and kitties up close. Yotes are usually taken at longer distances than what the rimfire is effective at. But some people do well with rimfire and or shottie on doggies at close range.

But, the cartidge is actually what you're looking to determine first. The 223 would serve you well for all of what you mention.

So would a 204Ruger, 222Remington, 22-250... 6mmRem.

Your price range for a combo probabely puts you looking for something 'used' if you want anything of quality.  (I'd look used anyway)

If you hand load, your 270 with 70gn bullets would be great on Yotes, and then you could pick up a Ruger 10-22, (everyone should have one anyway) for the varmints close in.

A Stevens 200 in .223 is a great bargin out there right now.
I'm a Leupold fan so keeping it under 400 would be tough for me, look for used.
Theres a lot of cheaper glass out there that folks like, I don't have any experience with any so I cant re comend anything.

x2  Or you could get the 17 in a marlin or savage for under $250 and put a $100 scope on it. I just bought a marlin 17 and am impressed with it I didnt think it would be much on anything past 75 yds but at 150 im still blown through a 2" board and 3-4" into my backstop thats with the 20 gr bullets

Who makes a 70 gr bullet for a 270 and have you shot them?
I think he meant 90 gr, never seen a 70 gr 270 bullet, it would be a stumpy little thing though :chuckle:

Mossberg makes a .17, belive the model is 817, just picked one up for $149 at wholesale sports, I love mossbergs, bought a caliber specific scope for it from cabelas for 100 bucks, has crosshairs for 100-150-200, zeroed at 100, gave the 200 a try, right on target.

Sorry folks, I did type 90gn for the 270cal.  I had 25-06 on my mind from a previous conversation.

Speer does make a 90gn bullet in 270cal.

For good performance and cheap catridges, pretty tough to beat the 223 for what you want to hunt.  ;)

Check the ads on here, there have been quite a few guns for sale, seems like I reember seeing a 223.

I just picked up a Stevens Model 200 in a .223 and put a Vortex scope on it. That put me right around $550 on it but it shoots fairly well for the price I paid for just the gun. Now knowing what I know and having shot a .223 I would look for a 22-250... flatter shooting and a little more damage than a 223

I'd go with a 223 and here's a scope for ya:  http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/default.aspx?productnumber=657824

Hurry up and get one before they're gone. Can't beat it for only $130. Nothing wrong with getting the scope before you get the rifle.

Looks like a nice rifle, but do you think he could be talked down from $650 to $400?   :dunno:    :o

I seldom stay within my budget!

Just showin one used one out there and what you get for xxx dollars. Some deals are better than others.

Send a pm to TESTAR77 to keep his eyes lookin for a 223 bolt gun. If you're patient, Toby just seems to fall into good/great deals.

Look at the savages.  You should be able to find one in 223 with scope for around 400.  It wont be a high end scope but it should get the job done until you can afford to upgrade.  Like everyone else said, check for used guns.  I once bought a 223 ruger  m77 mark II for a little over 400.  I should have kept that gun.   :bash:

How about a new stock for the .270....  You already have a great caliber for the task, already have a scope....  You would save a buttload of money and could spend your savings on a ton of ammo...

How about a lightweight .243? That way you can hunt big game with it also.

Bob33.. I love my .270 I use it for bear and coyotes, but I just want a smaller caliber to have fun with. I hunt deer and elk with a bow so I'm not worried about that. The reason why I dont wanna spend a lot of money is because I'm 18 and I dont have a lot of money to spend. ha

I've been thinking of getting a 17hmr myself, most folks don't seem to give them enough credit.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

I've been thinking of getting a 17hmr myself, most folks don't seem to give them enough credit.

Once you shoot a .17 hmr, you'll wonder why you didn't get one sooner.  They are FUN FUN FUN!  I like them so much I just bought my second one, a CZ with a BSA Sweet 17 scope for $300.00.  I know that shooting Coyotes with it would be pushing it, but if bullet placement is right, it should do the job.  In States like Michigan, it is only legal to shoot coyotes with a rimfire.

My other .17hmr is a Savage with the plastic stock.  Super accurate, and they run under $200. I've shot hundreds of Ground Squirrels and many Rockchucks, and it's a deadly little round.  I put a better scope on it, because the Simmons Whitetail 3x9 was hard on my eye when i used it to scan for Squirrels all day.

Champ 41;  if you want a good scope for a fun gun, I'll sell ya the Simmons 3x9 CHEEP!  Perfectly good scope--just not good to look thru for hours at a time.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"
