Flintlock coyote!
« on: January 15, 2011, 11:00:36 AM »
I bought a early Christmas present this year in the form of a .50 cal Lyman Great Plains Flintlock..Did some load development and found a load shooting 1-2" at 50 yards. That's the best I can see with open sights any longer..lol..Well after educating every coyote  on the east side of the state, I was able to connect this a.m. First stand right at shooting light I could just make out my front sight.  I started calling and two coyotes ran in.  I was able to stop one with a verbal bark at around 50 yards.  I pulled the trigger and that flash in the pan combined with the black powder created quite the cloud.  I could'nt see a thing.   I walked over to where the yote was standing and nothing. After a quick 5 minute search I found it laying about 25 yards.  I was shooting a patched round ball and the entry and exit holes were quite large.  I killed a yote in October with my .54cal round ball and it was quite a large exit wound too. Well I skinned it out  on the spot and have it on a stretcher as we speak.  It's been quite a fun predator season running around the hills with that flinter. Hopefully there will be a article on my entire season in a upcoming Muzzle blast magazine

Good job on the yote.

Ha
Looks like you have been bit by the "flintlock fever".
I have had it for a long time.
Used to know a guy from you area by the name of Jack Dolen shot with him a lot when we lived in Colfax.

Thanks it's been fun.  Yep I'm really enjoying the extra challenge of the flintlock. I'm still trying to figure it out in wet weather conditions.
Yep Slenk Jack still lives out here.  He puts on the best hunter ed program during the summer for kids that I've seen in any state.
