Capitol Forest Dog Down!
« on: January 23, 2011, 07:03:01 PM »
Last night Bobcat pm’d me wanting to know if I had time to go out for a coyote hunt. I have been busy and only been out a couple times so after some messages back and forth and a phone call in the morning……we were off.

We both had a few places in mind so we hit the closest areas first. The first couple spots we checked out were fogged in so we did a little driving and scouting above the fog line. On the way down the fog had lifted so we were able to walk into an old clear cut. Walking in we noticed some bobcat sign. We left after 15-20 minutes of nothing moving but fog. Took some poo pics on the way out.

The next stand was in a grassy cut above some reprod where I have seen bobcat sign in the past. We were about 8 minutes into the stand when 3 quads, illegally riding a closed trail, went right through the heart of the area.

We drove below the closed quad trail and found 4 piles in a short stretch of road so we set up a trail camera in the area.

The next set was a place that I called for bobs last weekend with no luck. I did find fresh kitty tracks though, so I figured we would give it a shot and then set up a trail camera.

We drove past the pipeline to park and walk back. As you walk into it, the area to the left is reprod for about 40 yards before it hits the mainline. The area to the right is reprod for a half-mile or more into a nasty hole.

On our way in I was looking for tracks in the mud and just happened to see a glimpse of white in the yellow grass. Not sure if it was a deer or yote, I asked what is that and Bobcat says “coyote” and we both hit the deck. The dog is coming out of the reprod on our left and heading right. There is only a 15-yard window and we were caught flatfooted. My rifle was still on my shoulder and I was carrying shooting sticks and a cow head (for the trail cam). I reach for my pocket to grab a call, but don’t have one. I immediately start smooching into my cupped hand. The yote stopped broadside and stared at us or at least in our direction and I told Bobcat to shoot.

Boom! Dog down at about 2 pm and a ringing in my right ear like you wouldn’t believe. Bobcat may have to correct me, but I think it was just over 100 paces with pieces of meat 25 paces beyond.

Good job guys, congrats. Did that poo taste like coyote or bobcat? :chuckle:

Those 150 grain Grand Slams out of a 270 Winchester work wonders on coyotes- he dropped in his tracks.   :chuckle:  Yep, it was 112 yards that I came up with by pacing. Forgot the rangefinder today. I was very happy to have saved at least a few fawns this coming spring.

If you must know, it wasn't mine. I was able to wait until I got home this afternoon. It's just so much more enjoyable that way, you know?
