Awesome day of sturgeon fishing!!!!
« on: January 28, 2011, 09:30:02 AM »
Three buddies and I rolled out of town at 3am heading for a new to us sturgeon destination.  Fished it from the bank a few times, but never had the boat there.  We ran down to a general area that I had gotten info about from a few fellow fisherman and started cruising for fish.  Took us about 30 min before we seen enough on the finder to drop the hook.  We have a ton of faith in the ff and if it don't show us much we won't drop.  So after 6 failed attempts to get the anchor to not break the old crappy zip ties.  We finally held on the spot.  It was the best day fishing that any of us had ever had.  We had doubles into the teens and several triples.  Brought over a dozen keepers to the boat and landed over 75 fish.  It was so hectic we had a hard time videoing without the guy running the camera getting a bite. Biggest keeper was 53" and the smallest was 43".  With a ton of fish right around 38" that we didn't even measure.  We blew through 4 dozen herring, 5 bags of smelt, some sand shrimp, and even some clam neck.  Had squid, but no one wanted it on their hands:)  It was hard to get time to eat a sandwich.

It was moving pretty good. We were throwing 32oz in that deeper water.  We ran low on them and ended up throwing a few 40oz leads to stay closer to the boat.  One buddy threw a 20oz lead for most of the day, but he had to walk it back a bit.

One thing that I learned that I never worried about was checking the dacron leader after a fish.  I broke two fish off on the hook set.  Both of them were on the leader.  We actually caught one of em and it was a nice keeper.  These fish have super sharp diamonds and they were fraying our leaders on the ones that rolled in the line.  I've caught hundreds of sturgeon and never once broke a dacron leader.  I think I thought the stuff was like winch line or something:)  Just an fyi.

Here's a quick video I threw up. Not the greatest, but you'll get the gist of it.  Fishing was so hectic that we didn't do real well on the follow through with the video.  Usually had to shut it off to get a bite:)

Perhaps the funniest thing I've read on the internet in quite some time!  HA!
Well done Kris!  I had to present the middle finger to your wife multiple times as she was leaving Friday night, bragging about all the sturgeon she was gonna go home and eat.

That spot was 101'.  Lots of depressions to drop some bait in.  Yes it is a long drive.  Worth it though.
