Huckleberry Spring Bear Tag
« on: May 06, 2008, 04:20:05 PM »
My 10 year old daughter drew a spring bear tag for the Huckleberry Unit and while she's already killed a deer, for some reason really wants a bear?  I've been all over the state, but not familiar with the Huckleberry at all.  Wondered if anybody might have some suggestions on where or where not to focus my efforts.  I'd be willing to return the favor.

Planning on heading over there for the last week of May, hopefully the snow will be melting off good by then and we'll be able to get around.  Hopefully the turkey hunters will be thinned out by than also?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Good luck to everybody!

Welcome to the site.
I am not familiar with that area, but I am sure if you post more and settle in someone will be able to help.

There is a lot of private land over there, but you can find public access if you look hard enough.
Monumental Road off of Orin-Rice is one area I know is public.
There are a few places along HWY 25 as well along the lake.

The bears are moving over there.  We did not get drawn for the tags or I would be there!  We have seen three different bears off our property over there in the last two weeks or so..........

I am not too familiar with a lot of the area over there yet, so not too much help, sorry.

Good luck to her! :mgun2:

huckleberry is a large unit.  I would concentrate out of Gifford.  Take the Gifford Addy Road and go up through there.  Lots of sign during deer season. It is steep rugged country in spots.  Also go to Stevens COunty website and look up maps and  landowner names if you got the time.  There is a lot of info on the web nowadays that can give aerial photos etc...my favorite is Flashearth.com.  Good luck.
Wild Turkey, Walleyes, Whitetails and Wapiti..These are a few of my favorite things!!
