Bear bait?

Alll good choices that have been listed, but I can't believe nobody has mentioned over-ripe fruit.......like pears!  Damn near impossible to beat in my opinion back in the good ole days of WA bait hunting.

quick side question here, not trying to jack but when was baiting banned? I've on lived in WA for 11 years and only got into hunting in the last 4 or 5.


Back on topic.....will bears come to salt licks like their hooved friends?

sure a bear will visit lick sites but they wont frequent it much, they prefer stuff that will help them put on a good layer of fat, and yes it was a sad day when they took baiting away

Totally agree that it was a very sad day when that bill passed.  When you could bait we would bring them in by putting what was left of a filleted salmon.  Hang 5 or 6 of those carcuses from a tree and trying to get them as high as you can in the tree.  That stink worked very good in bringing them in to you bait pile.

We never had a salmon season over here in eastern WA before 1996 though, so we had a hardtime doing that......

A buddy down south mentioned he used corn w/ flavored syrup (italian soda type) & gummy bears with great success

All of the "old timer" that i have talked to have suggested using old restaurant fry grease and putting it on dog food. The problem with that now is that the restaurants rarely give it away to get rid of it, like they used to!

Back in WI, we used just about anything we could get our hands on that was legal.  When I lived in St. Louis, I could get hostess products, pies, ding dongs, twinkies, etc. by the truck load.  Those were like gold.  Fryer grease over old bread was good, shelled corn, waste candy, old donuts, etc.  Pour some liquid smoke on just about anything and that'll draw them in too.

Back in the early 80's when I was doing alot of baiting there was a product that came from Montana called 10 Dead Horse's. It was 2 bottles that ya poured together. As long as they were apart it was ok but when mixed you could smell it for a great distance. My hunting buddy freshened the bait one day and I hadn't told him about the stuff so he poured it to gether and then

Another good choice is the industrial packages of jello (Cherry or Lime scent carried for miles) easy to pack and all ya needed was a couple of bottles of water or a creek close to get water. Find an old rotten stump and then pour the powder on it and get wet enough to saturate the stump. Great if there was a hole in the middle,Take a chunk of bark from a tree and cover the hole. So when ya went to check to see if ya got a hit and it was working if the bark was knocked off time to sit and watch.

But since they have banned baiting here I have lost my touch! Still have all my barrels stored in case by some wild chance it ever returns but my guess is they will just stay in the stack!

A lot of the guys and outfits that I know run a lot of pastries and sweet stuff. Others just run bulk dog food
