1947 Remington 870 16 guage
« on: February 09, 2011, 08:57:46 AM »
My husband has inherited this gun and wants a set of chokes especially a turkey choke for it.  I have been to many different sites looking but the 16 guage seems to be the problem.  Since I am not a gun expert I was wondering if anyone would know of a set of chokes that might fit this gun.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Check with Carlson's Chokes. Google it, I can't get on their site from here at work.
If they don't have something, safe to assume nobody will.

the 16 guage seems to be the problem

And it will continue to be. Ammo is less available and more expensive when found then in 12 or 20 gauge. Some parts may be interchangeable with the 12 gauge but not choke tubes. Try calling Remington.

If the gun is that old, it would have a fixed choke barrel. For another choke size you would have to buy another barrel.

Great point...didn't even think about that.
You could talk to a gunsmith and have the barrel threaded for chokes but there's a cost-effective issue/debate with that too.

Don’t hack up a vintage gun like that.  However it is currently choked it will kill turkeys.  Just get the right ammo for it and find out its effective range.

if it was made in in '47, it's not an 870!  the first year of the 870 was 1950 to the best of my knowledge.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

Tuna is correct, 1950, must be a model 31, or the year is wrong.

id buy a new gun, hes just asking for problems. one turkeyload thru a gun that old will F stuff up...

any modern hunting load will mess stuff up, i had an old gun blow up on me once, i was trap shooting with a 1952 sportsman 48 using target loads, i accidently cycled one turkey shell (2 3/4") thru it and shortly afterwards the entire bolt blew out the side, barrel bulged a little, and the only part of the shell that ejected was the metal base cap, it was the right length shell (2 3/4) but since then i had my eyes opened.... they designed guns differently back then, and the ammo wasnt as powerful as we have now. dont risk it. since then i have retired all my old guns..... thats my  :twocents:

and yeah back in the day you didnt buy choke tubes, you bought different barrels

you can shoot it all you want, but it only takes one pull of the trigger to mess up your day and you dont know when or where it will happen... maybe im just a chicken...

So fas as I am aware SAAMI pressures haven't changed for shotguns, if you blew up a gun jeepster it wasn't due to a change in proper ammunition.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Geez!  I was 2 years old when that gun was made.  More and more bird hunting areas are requiring non-lead shotshells.  Finding 16 Ga. non-lead shotshells might be a problem.  That old, it's probably got a fixed-choke barrel.  If it's a Full Choke barrel, do NOT shoot steel shot in it.

In my opinion, a gun that old, and 16 Ga. to boot--is a Wall Hanger.  Remington 870's are not that expensive, and a new 870 will have a barrel with interchangeable choke tubes, and be 12 Ga. with endless options for ammo.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"
