Hornady Superformance
« on: February 11, 2011, 01:59:27 PM »
Just tried for the first time - 30-06 InterBond 180 grain Superformance came from Cabela's.
First shot hit the bullseye and then I shot 3 groups from that wnent 3/4  - 1.5 inch, from sandbags, somewhat comfortable shooting position. I did not wait the barrel to cool completely. So, that 1.5 inch group is rather shooter's error. Amazing ammo. My rifle (CZ American) did not like old Hornady loads... It was the least preffered ammo - but the new ones are winner from get go. Just sharing my experience with you...

What was the velocity you were you getting?

I am really interested in trying JUST the powder with Bergers, Barnes, Noslers, etc...

I would be curious to see how your "on game" performance is. Last season in camp a guy was shooting the same rounds and had very poor game performance. Double lung on a mulie and no expansion. He had a neat little hole in and out. Great shot placement just no performance for whatever reason. Could have been a fluke but my guess was go much velocity and penetration without the required expansion. Sounds like the rounds run very well for you and I hope they perform just as well when the bullet meets the meat.

Velocity is 2820 ft/s, according to Hornady. Seems to be true, from my parameters (my barrel is 23.6 inches). Rifle was sighted for 165 grain Federal Premium Sierras (muzzle vel. 2880), was hitting 1.5 inches high on 100 yds.
This one hits bullseye consistently (therefore 1.5 inches lower). Given that the bullet is heavier and velocity 60ft/s lower, this seems to be just about consistent...
This is the Interbond by Hornady, well known stuff. They just started offering Superformance line of ammo with Interbond. Last fall season they had Interlock and GMX (lead free) only. So, I think that I now have affordable elk ammo that works well in my rifle, with a little more oomph than regular 180 grain stuff on the market.

Your ammo may be different. I remember the guy saying his had a very high velocity for the caliber. You will just have to keep us posted when you hunt with it.

I sure will...  ;) Hope to have a good bragging episode next fall. I am planning to use this on Bear and Elk.
