I know there are a bunch of suppliers these days, Mountain House, Backpackers Pantry, Richmoor, & Alpineaire. I normally just stick with Mountain House chicken & rice or beef stew. What are some other good ones?

I don't know. I think Mt. House is about as good as it gets. I like the Chicken Breast & Potatoes and the Beef Stroganoff.

I always just get Mountain house.
Chili Mac and beef, and Teriyaki chicken are the best!

Mtn House for me also. Any of them work, as I'm not too picky usually when I'm eating them. Beef Stroganoff and Teriyaki Chicken would my favs. I'm actually really surprised that no other company has stepped up and created a new line. It's definately something that could be improved in the hunting/backpacking industry.

Two favorites are both from Moutain House. Chicken Teriyaki with Rice and Sweet and Sour Pork with Rice.

There are quite a few out there. If you go to the Campmor.com site, they have many different ones, some so fancy I don't even make them at home.

I meant a company that made a meal that was better tasting and price comparable than Mtn House

I started making my own with a food dehydrater and boy are they tasty. A good plus is the cost is only 2-3 bucks per meal insted of 6-7. Take a look at all the recipes at Backpackingchef.com, my favorite is the Mexican stuff.

I'm going to dig out the food dehydrater to do just that. I've got some ideas of my own and I've found a few hints of some high protien meals on the net.

Mtn House: In addition to the ones listed, the spaghetti is good, too.

Under NO conditions should you ever eat the Backpacker's Pantry Phad Thai, though. That'll give a starving hyena the dry heaves. After a rough 14 mile day I couldn't eat it and had to throw it away.

Other than that, you can make some yourself by getting instant cous cous or quick cook rice with a flavor packet and add a pack of chicken to it (those little foil packs you can buy now.) Put it all in a gallon ziplock, write the directions for the cous cous/rice on the side and then just add boiling water, wrap in your coat until it gets done cooking and then dump in the chicken. Good times.

i like the mountain house meals as well, have not found one that i cannot eat yet and im a pretty picky eater. i probably like the beef stroganoff the best. i usually get the pro pack, plenty enough food for me and u still get as many calories and what not as the two serving meals.

Some of my hunting buddies buy the Army MRE's by the case and pack them in on hiking and hunting trips. All you do is heat them up in hot water or use the chemical heater that's provided. I can't recommend them for the taste department, and the vets out there will most likly agree, but they're designed for individual consumption and are super loaded with calories. One package meal is around 3000 by itself, if you eat everything in it. I agree with the other posts about getting a dehydrator/seal-a-meal kit and doing it yourself. You get what you want cause you made it. As much as Mtn House and the others claim to have the best tasting food, i think your stomach will decide for you on that.

Mt House is still (a couple years now) having problems filling orders for the #10 cans.

Mre's are not bad these days but there are real heavy compaired to mountainhouse, they do have about twice the calories in a meal. I'm a big eater so I have two eat about 4 servings of mountainhouse after a big day in the backcountry to fill up. Mountainhouse needs to make a "man" sized meal if you ask me.

My favorite MH meal is the Seafood chowder-cook a trout and mix it in with the chowder and you have a back country meal like no other-other than eating trout themselves, of course. We tried Chicken Pesto Pasta MRE's yesterday that were excellent.

I like the backpackers pantry phad thai, and just about anything mountain house makes. I also take a kraft mac'n cheese microwaveable with me and it becomes my insulated bowl for oatmeal and such. that has cut a pot out of my pack. I carry some dry refried beans and cous cous too for filler.

I like most of the mountainhouse and I almost always have one in my pack because a hot lunch beats the hell out of a soggy sandwich for lunch anyday. but when I am overnighting it I only take the chicken and rice because it has the most calories of any of their meals(that I like). It gets a little old after a few days but my food intake is more about calories than taste.

Been a long time since I've had Mt. House, I've lived in the field off authentic MRE's most of the time. I've noticed alot of vendors getting into the survival food gig... (I know, I know the worlds going to end tomorrow... yada...yada...yada) Anyway, I got a free sample from a place called "Daily Bread", but sheesh they want like 4k for 8 months of freeze dried stuff...) I could do much better on 4k with a canner and vacuum bagger. I'll have to try the Mt. House stuff...
