Broken antlers
« on: February 13, 2011, 06:47:23 AM »
Was shed hunting yesterday and found this elk tine. I am guessing that it is left over from a couple of bulls sparing. I find a few antlers each year and sometimes there are tines broken off. Last year my largest was a 7 point bull with a large tine broken off. Is this common for other hunters to find.

Not sure if its common or not, but I have found about a dozen broken off tines throughout the years.  Found a chunk of mainbeam once.  Like when you snap a tree limb and the center piece punches out.   That has to take some serious force.

I always find bucks that have broken tines, or main beams. It kind of sucks, because they lost alot of inches. Found a piece of a tine one time tough.

I am thinking that this one took a pretty good jolt to break off.

My wife picked up a good sized moose antler once that was broke off about two inches above the pedical.  It was also cracked about half way up the palm out to the back end.

Ive only picked up a piece of a broken antler once. It looked like the back fork off of a mule deer. Rare find!

One of my buddys found that end of a broken paddle last year while bow hunting. Who knows it might be off of the same horn!

I watched an elk get his antler torn right out of his skull, was pretty cool. One of my boys picked up 3 broken elk tine up in about a 50yd radius clearing. No pic's of his tines.
