Everything a go for friday on Lake Amistad
« on: March 02, 2011, 10:17:20 AM »
Heard the big girls are coming up and looking around to find a nice bed. They just broke the lake record in late Jan with a 16.8 pound largemouth. Hopefully I will break it again. But if not any double digit largeie is good enough for me. Only thing that sucks kind of is it is a 7 hour drive and that is one of the closer lakes to El Paso.

Hopefully pictures to follow this up on Monday.

I've heard it's heating up down there for the bucketmouths!  I'd just rather sit here and watch it spit snow anyway.........

Ok so just got back, will make it short and sweet. No I did not bring a camera I remembered it about 75 miles out of El Paso, was not turning around.

It was a 1000 miles round trip, left on Friday got back on Sunday.

Fri night - hit water about 4 pm, went straight across bay to a flooded brushy area. Started flipping sand senkos in. First cast, felt teh thump set the hook and got my first texas bass. From there worked the outer edge some and managed to put 7 fish in the boat, all small bucks 2-4 pounds. Very light colored just came out of deep water so have not started coloring up good yet.  And the one other thing flipped into a pocket between two small trees. Left it dead sticking and lit up a cigarette, went to lift the line felt a little weight so let it go limp thinking caught in the trees, took a drag and then lifted again, still some weight, so attempted to pop it out of there, that is when momma let me know she was on the other end, about broke my wrist when she went right. Lesson learned, want to smoke don't cast.

Sat - Wind steady 15 miles an hour with 40 mile an hour gusts. North Wind, almost impossible to fish the lake with wind that way. In my mind I was like BS, 500 miles to fish, its game time. Launched boat in a small cove, went to same type of trees started throwing black and blue jig with blue and black crawdad trailer and commenced to catching the same size bass as day before, would watch and when wind would die down a little bit, would jump on the big motor and hit the end of the point and fish in about 20 ft of water, about the 4th time I did that. I pulled up around the corner and see shad flying out of the water and big swirls. Said to myself uhoh stipers!!!! Grabbed the jerk bait rod, threw out there 3 twitches, Pause, two twitches, Explosion on the rod, drag ripping out line breaking - Lesson learned don't use a 20.00 lucky craft and 12 pound test on a 20 plus pound striper.   After that happened started throwing 9 inch lizards in deeper water skimming them over grass beds. Caught a solid thump set the hook, fight was on. Got her about 15 ft from boat, nice fish about 6-7 pound largemouth. She turned spit the hook. I dove to the deck to not get whacked in the head with a 1/2 oz sinker. Wind picked up, I got on trolling motor, kept going back wards, trolling motor stopped working. Went to dock loaded boat came in to town and 206.98 cents later had my trolling motor working again.... The heck with it I went and ate chow.

Sun- Wind was picking up, 6am pointed the truck North and headed back to El Paso.

Overall was a good trip, will be back from Apr 10-17 to play with the big mommas there, and will bring a camera this time.

Sounds like a good time!  I gotta laugh at you chucking the ole Lucky Craft jerkbait out on the 12 lb test after a Striper!!!   I guess ya never know......if it woulda worked out, you'd be in high heaven, but it didn't..........and besides, what the hell is another $20 after a 1000 mile round trip! :chuckle:  PS, you'd have never got that big gal to bite had you not lit up a smoke......... :chuckle:
