Battery-less lighted nocks
« on: May 16, 2008, 05:17:12 PM »
It was suggested that I post here our findings over on the Fobnation site about lighted nocks. Seems you up there have a law saying no battery-operated devices attached to either the bow or the arrow, which leaves out all the current "Lumenock" type products. The solution I figured out is not nearly as bright as a luminock, but worked pretty well. One hour after sunset I was able to see the nock 40 yards across the yard, so finding an arrow in the dark should be made alot easier. I used a micro glow light that I had received with some squid imitation lures. These lights fit great into the base of my GT nocks - all I had to do was just slightly open up the nock by reaming it out with a 3/16 drill. The company that I bought the lures from said that these glow lights can be found at Walmart and some party supply stores.
Hope the info can be of some use - hopefully this Southern Californian can get up to do some real hunting in your part of the country...

How do you turn them on and off?

It's a glow stick, so there is no turning it off.  I used these on my bear hunting last year, and the camera picked them up better than my eye did.  I would just have a nock and FOB in my hand waiting for animal.  When one showed, I would snap the glow stick and put the nock on.  It's pretty simple and, best of all, legal in WA and ID.  The drill I used was a bit big for the WalMart glow sticks, so I used a single layer of scotch tape to make a friction fit.  One tip with these: color on the ones you've shot with a permanent marker so you can determine new from used in your archery tackle box.

Those look like the glow sticks we use for night golfing. You may be able to find them at a golf store as well.

These are 4.5mm in diameter, the golf ball lights are 6mm and will be too big to fit inside a nock (but may fit inside a fat shaft).
