Turkey hunting around Davenport
« on: March 13, 2011, 01:10:45 PM »
I am a novice when it comes to turkey hunting.  Been  few times around Colville w/ minimal success.  We leased a piece of ground last Fall for deer just North of Davenport on the breaks of the Spokane R.  It looked like it could certainly hold turkeys though we never saw any.  I believe it would be Eastern's there?  It's a 6 1/2 hour drive one way so it's kind of tough to scout very much.  My question to any locals is if there are many turkeys around the area and would a trip be futile w/o any pre-scouting  Thanks in advance.

I hunted Davenport a couple of years ago and only saw turkeys and I mean a ton of turkeys.  With the right set up you should be fine.

Thanks for the clarification Bearpaw.  I think I meant to say Rio's.  Sounds like it might be worth the trip.

There are a lot of turkeys around Davenport and most of them are Rio's as Bearpaw stated. As for scouting I would say give it some thought, or atleast contact the land owner and see if he has seen turkeys there before. Just because there are turkeys around Davenport I would not bank they are on the land you have access to unless you have seen them there during the spring time. Perhaps a little more specific area (NE of or 20 miles west of ?) would get you a little better intel. Find someone on this site the lives near there that could even PM you some info. If you have the spot and are not asking for theirs folks on here like to help out :twocents:.

Wheres the lease?  I might be able to help ya.  There are very few public land pieces in Lincoln County.  I know a few areas and could point ya in the right direction.  You leasing ground around Ft SPokane or up river farther?

If you got the same lease that I got a couple of years ago - you got took just like I did!  If a guy from Spokane that works for a bank arranged it for you - you are in for a long season - there are damn few birds around this area, because the surrounding farms and ranch owners constantly run their property lines with four wheelers and shoot shotguns, or do fireworks to harass the hunters on this guys property - the farmer that leases the property sets up really small boundaries and yet advertises hundreds of acres -There is a piece of school property in the area that a lot of the locals run into, and it sounds like a calling contest in there - I am hoping you did not end up with the same lease, but again, if this was arranged by a guy from spokane - get your money back before the season -

The lease we had was for deer and worked out great.  Sounds like you may be talking about the same guy.  As far as deer hunting went, I thought he was a great guy.   Sounds like turkey hunting there might be a different story however.  I know he has some whacked neighbors.  Didn't think they made a big deal about the turkey hunting.  Thanks for the heads-up

I would be cautious..if money can be made they will try and make it.  Especially if they know there are no guarantees.  I would ask to scout property first and see if it is worth it.  If not I would keep your money and go north.   :twocents:

I  agree with Yelp ... public land is scarse in that area and gets hammered, so you won't have much of an option if the lease is no good ... unless you know someone like I do or have a good lease then it could suck.   :twocents:

Yes, the farmer himself is an alright guy, but its a combination of everything else that makes this a bad idea.  We never talked with the farmer  and just arranged the lease through the guy from spokane.  We showed up for opening weekend after having been up there the week before and seeing no birds to have the farmer tell us he hadnt seen any birds around for quite a long time.  it was brutal.  Good luck.
