anyone have a model 88 winchester?
« on: March 13, 2011, 01:40:53 PM »
i took apart my model 88 and put it back together here recently... since then the action has had a strange hang up when opending the action all the way. it pretty tough to get it completly open and then tough to get it to shut again.... the action runs smooth up untill that last little bit. does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? ive oiled it well and i cant figure it out. oh, and its a pre 64 in .243

I have a model 88, but have never taken the action completely apart. After looking at a breakdown sheet I decided that cleaning it out with gun scrubber aerosol would be better. Talked to a gunsmith and he said that they are hard to get back together correctly. I heard that there was a gunsmith in the Moses Lake area who was good with them, unfortunately I don't know his name. Model 88s are great guns, Good Luck.

There are still quite a few Model 88's around yet.  I got mine in 308 cal, 35 years ago as my first rifle and I still have it.  I have never taken mine apart.  It looked like something that might be above my abilities to reassemble.  I got mine for $120 and now I see them selling for $800-$1000.  I wish I had never refinished the stock, pretty well lowered the value with that trick.
