Should have kept my cool...............
« on: March 20, 2011, 03:37:02 PM »
Went yote hunting this morning with Skybuster, and did a nice 3 mile hike uphill :yike:  Saw a coyote on the way up, and made a stand about a mile away from where that coyote was.  Set up Skybusters FoxPRo Spitfire, and my yote decoy.  Had perfect shooting angles on the spot, and we were set up right on the side of the road(gated) Well Mr. Wiley decided to come in from above, even though the wind was broadcasting our signal all over. I spun as best as I could and took a akward wing and prayer shot.  He then ran up the road, I scrambled to get up on the road and took a shot as he was just getting out of sight.(100 + yards)  WHAM!!  Dog down, and rolling, he then started thrasing about, and I figured he was down for the count.  I started hooting and howlering, and next thing I know he is running down the side of the hill.  Heck of a blood trail, and we followed it for close to two hours before it went cold. Next time Im going to wait for the death thrases to stop >:(  As you can tell from the photos that my 55 Grain 223 round did some damage, and pushed some flesh out.

Cool. Sorry you didn't get to see him on thre ground. However, don't think he went to far with damage like that. Did the blood look dark red like all muscle damage or any bubbles or guts in there?

He went about a mile before it went cold.  At first a ton of blood, then just sprinkles back to spot areas of mass leakage.  Im almost wondering if a cougar picked him up :dunno: Didnt see dark blood or guts down the trail, but then again he took us through  swamp and some really thick stuff.

That Yote was Hit Hard! There was blood all over the place and a heavy blood trail for a couple hundred yards, then it slowly turned into a drop or two every few feet and got really tough to follow on the dirt ground in the trees.

Bottom Line though, He didn't make it.

Seth forgot to mention that this was the second yote of the morning. The first one showed up walking twords us as we were hiking up the hill. It was immedietly scared off by me saying  "sh** Coyote!"  and dropping the decoy on the ground.  :bash:

It's amazing how much blood a dog can lose without it killing him.  If he can run for 2 miles, he probably wasn't hit that bad.  Sorry to be the rain on the parade, but it seems to be the day for it here.  Should have put another round into him while he was thrashing around.  :violent1:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

I shot one once with my 300 Win and blew his front leg off and clipped his brisket, he started spinning and I took a little more off and missed once.  He took off and I rolled him again and took off most of his off side back leg.  He got up and I shot him again, this time taking off his other front leg and the lower part of his chest.  When I got up to him he was still snapping at me until I dispatched him.  Damn yote cost like $10-15 in ammo.  I was into my second clip by the time he was down for the count.

I took a leg of one with my 30.06 but was lucky enough to be a 300 yard distance, and he dindnt know where I was. He curled up, and I put another one in him.  Yes yote hunting can cost some ammo, and if your in a area where you have good view, more lead seams to fly :P

Did he look like he was running with all legs when you last saw him?

Yep, I either put one in his ribs or his guts.  But didnt see any dark blood, or guts on the trail we followed.  But boy was there a bunch of bright red blood, and when the blood let went to a few trickles, we came upon a few areas where either he stopped, or reopened the wound, and we would find another huge area of blood loss.

Thats too bad you didn't catch up to him. I would believe he is laying somewhere dead as a door nail.

Yes I beleive so too, or he was snatched up by another predator.  Where the blood trail finally died out we made huge 50-100 yard circles, and couldnt pick up his trail or any more blood :bash: That area was pretty wide open, and if he laid down there would have been real easy to spot.  What sucked worse besides the swamp, was coming back up the hill after all that.

After I pulled the trigger I had a slight glimmer of hope that he would be on my wall.  He still had a winter coat, and it was a very thick one. :(

Well it sounds like you definitely put in a good effort to retrieve him. Kudos to you on that!!
