First year turkey hunter
« on: March 23, 2011, 01:07:09 PM »
I will be heading out to scout the Quilomene unit this Friday and Saturday.  Not the best in WA state but much closer than NE and decent success rates over the past few years.  I am pretty set on this unit but could be swayed with some convincing evidence.  Any recommendations for this unit in particular?  Ideas on where to start?  Turkey scouting basics?  I have tried to put in due diligence on the computer doing research but that only goes so far once you are out in the field.  Any suggestions would be great.  I am hoping for one or two scouting trips before hunting the opener.  Thanks in advance.

I am not from WA so maybe take what I have to say with a grain of salt.

That being said I have harvested my fair share of public land turkeys in the east.

Wake up early and try to quietly walk through the woods listening for gobbles off
the roost. In Ky they like to roost along river edges or ridgetops in hardwood trees
(I don't know about WA)

Just burn a lot of boot leather (this is assuming of course that you have already
looked the area over on google maps, regular maps, etc.

Good luck.
