burglarized . . . gotta vent
« on: March 31, 2011, 12:37:49 PM »
Well, I guess everyone has to have a bad day now and then . . . and I'm getting my turn. . . gotta vent a little.  I post this mainly b/c it is cathartic, but also to maybe put word out about this stuff in case it shows up in classifieds or the like.

I never usually leave my bow out in the garage, but had just made a peep change/adjustment and was planning to head to the range today/tomorrow . . . well someone decided they wanted it and my archery kit box.  The bow was nothing too special to the rest of the world, but it was very special to me.  I shoot fingers compound and it was a Reflex Caribou (just had put a new custom string on it, too - neon green and black) . . . these bows are kinda hard to come by these days, and a new bow of a similar variety is some $$.  1 dz. arrows were also taken (white wraps w/orange cresting w/ a white cock vane and two orange vanes).  Tru Glo sight, two piece quiver, and stabilizer were w/ the bow.

Along with the bow, they took a storage bin with some stuff sacks that I use to organize some gear for quickly loading a pack depending on the season . . . this had all my deer calls (rattling bag, grunt call, can call etc.), elk calls (many), full body safety harness, tree steps, an older gps that I don't use much any more (kids use it with me geocaching), broadhead kit box (couple dz. BHs and spare blades), portable bow press w/split limb adapters, hip quiver, badlands monster fanny pack, Nikon rangefinder, arrow rests (and many other little archery odds and ends), my first hunting knife from my parents (along with a couple of other knives) which was in my field dressing kit, headlamps (2), camo dry bag, . . . and more.

I'm pretty bummed out, to say the least . . . and really pissed.  Had to share to help start the healing, money is tight in my household so this hurts . . . I have acquired this stuff bit by bit over many years.  Not the worst thing that could happen to a person, so I'm keeping perspective - I have a healthy family and a steady job, so I know things could be worse.

Okay, healing commenced . . .

I feel for ya. I got broken into on the westside when I lived there. All they took was food. They missed my Colt Combat 1911 and $500 which was laying under the 45. My wife scared them off when she came home. They were lucky that day. Hopefully they get pumped full of lead by a homeowner....

We will keep our eye/ears open. That string will make it pretty easy to notice.

You know what, I'd call local area bow shops and let them know about your bow and it's custom string.  I'd guess the thief doesn't have a press himself, and if he tries to get the thing restringed or even just worked on for that matter they can notify you.

Dig deep and see if you can find pictures of your bow and some of the key accesories stolen, theres a good chance it will pop up on craigslist or seattleguns in the next 6 months even if it trades hands a time or tomorrow before that.

post whatever pics you have in this thread and you could send a side note with pics and descriptions  to the mods at seattle guns too.

he mentioned they took his portable press too. but they prob dont know how to use it anyways.

Having a little more time to check things over when I got home from work . . . my back up bow (one I do usually keep in the garage) was also taken.

It is an accessorized (older) PSE Dakota w/ custom string and cable in tan and green.

I've called some archery shops, a few pawn shops, and will be checking craigslist and e-bay with some frequency.

I've been thinking of making the switch to trad, maybe these scumbags helped push me over the edge.  Now I just need to scratch some funds together to start putting my bowhunting-life back together . . . hopefully before turkey season is over.

Thanks fellas for the comments.

Were any bows in a camo case?  Reason I ask, is a guy came into the gun shop where I was yesterday, plunked a bow ina a camo case on the counter and aske if we bought bows.  We don't, so he took it and left.  Might give Wenatchee PD a call and alert them to your stolen stuff.  I thought it was odd that the guy didn't look like the bowhunter type.  You never know.

P.S.  That's why I finally got a gun safe.  I got to looking at all the guns I had scattered around the house and thought:  "Gee, If someone breaks into this place while I'm gone, they're gonna make a haul!"
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

That sucks, and the worst part is there is probably other things missing that you wont realize till you need them. Did you have homeowners/renters insurance?

If you make a insurance claim make sure you turn in your receipts after you replace your stuff to get the remaining money they owe you.  Since the insurance company will most likely settle with you and offer a market value (depreciated) dollar amount and then make up the replacement dollars they owe you once you have bought the replacement equipment.

Sorry too hear this. There is nothing worse then a f#$%ing thief. And your right, sucks worse when things are tight. Several years ago the same thing happened to me. I was scheduled to teach an CPR class at the local hospital and had gone Elk hunting earlier in day. Lost track of time and had to rush back from Trout Lake in order to get there on time. Had no time to stop at home to unload. Through coat over bow, locked truck and went inside. Came out after class and cab was empty. Bow, packboard, fanny pack, coat all were gone. *censored*s even stole tp out of glove box. Sawed through the latch on sliding rear window. Apparently this behavior goes unnoticed in well lite hospital parking lots, because no one saw a damn thing.  >:( I feel your pain man  :'( hope you find the SOB that did it. If so I know a few rocky ravens that not man white men have seen this century and am always up for a nice day hike.
Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me

did you have the GPS units matched together?
If so turn your good one on and it will show the last position if they turned it on to see if it works.

then go hunting! :hello:

I only ask this as all my uncles and their hunting partners have their handheld GPS units to track each other. would really make a thieves night having a bunch of blue and red lights flashing in their drive.

I feel your pain.  4 yrs ago I bought a new bow and had shot all summer feeling pretty good about things.  Mid August I had it in my garage in my bow case along with range finder, arrows, etc. etc.  woke up to go get the paper and the garage door was open bow case gone.  Early archery season started in 3 weeks and Im bow poor.  Local bow shop got me outfitted and shooting even before insurance money was paid.  They told me not to worry about it and pay when money showed up.  Thanks to Billy and Mark.  To bad the shop closed.  Top notch people.  Good luck with your issue, and you are right.  Healthy family and steady job are way more important that anything else.
