Tasers - Where can I find one locally
« on: April 14, 2011, 09:59:02 AM »
Please help - my wife is departing on a bike trip tomorrow and I would like her to carry a taser.  I know a gun would be better, but she has not had any time to practice and has never shot a pistol before, so I am thinking a taser is her next best bet.

Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated!!!
Thanks!
Brian

Knowing where you live would help to know where local would be.

Do you really just hand someone a taser and give them a pat on the back and a "have at it"?  :yike:
Some pepper spray might be a better idea.  :twocents:

wow.. don't  I feel dumb  :bash: :bash: .... I live in Edgewood.

She just got back from the mail box and her CWP did show up today.  It only took 2 weeks!

Any thoughts on letting her carry a gun even though she is not trained?  She will be traveling across America, and has checked all of the laws of the states she will be in, but I just dont feel comfortable her carrying one without  the training - BUT - she is leaving tomorrow one way or the other.   :bash: :bash:

Bear spray. I think it shoots further than regular people pepper spray. What do you think Mr. Jackelope ?
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

She has pepper spay and I have installed a big can of bear spray right next to her and showed her how it is used.
I wish I could get her to hold up her departure for a couple weeks to get some training but .....  :bash:

Ridgeratt - great idea!  Thank you!

I tried to order 1 but they cannot send it overnight and they say they have no distribution centers on the west coast. :bash:

Thanks anyway!

I think bear spray would be a fantastic idea, Mr. Campmeat.

So she has pepper spray and bear spray and potentially a taser and maybe a pistol?

Be careful having her in possession of a Taser...  Some jurisdictions (like Tacoma) outlaw civilian possession of electronic control tools, even if you have a concealed carry permit.

The Taser International civilian model is nice....  30 seconds of power without being able to turn it off during that 30 seconds, and its only a one time use.  If you have to use it in self defense, and have a police report supporting this, they will replace it.  The law enforcement model only allows 5 second bursts, multiple uses (or pressing of the trigger).  The theory behind the one time, 30 second use is to allow the victim to run away from any attacker.

I still think some hot lead is better....
"A peculiar virtue in wildlife ethics is that the hunter ordinarily has no gallery to applaud or disapprove of his conduct.  Whatever his acts, they are dictated by his own conscience, rather than that of onlookers.  It is difficult to exaggerate the importance of this fact"

In this day and age you can never be to cautious.  I bought my wife a nice ka-bar replica which sits next to her in the car by her buckle, I gave her one of my spare ASPs' and placed it by her feet and I also have a fold out knife on the side door and her hunting knife right next to it.  The OC Spray I bought for her just past its useful life so that needs to be replaced.  Your wife can be instructed in a day or two with a pistol if you sit her down and give it to her straight and to the point.  Just stick to the basics for now and then more instructions when she gets back.  Safe trip for your wife!

Thanks for all the advice and opinions.  I really appreciate it.
We will be sticking with the bear spray and a Kimber Pepper Blaster for the first leg of the trip.
Hopefully before she heads out for the 2nd leg, she will get some firearms training!
Thanks again!

:yeah:  Damn, I'm not even that well armed!

Where is the bike trip?  Check laws in those locations. THE CITY OF BELLINGHAM HAS A LAW AGAINST TASERS!!!

Not kidding. The wife and I with CPL can carry guns in Bellingham, but no one can carry a TASER except the cops inside the city limits.

She should do just fine with the pepper spray.  Now, if she's riding through Renton, Kent, Covington, Spanaway, then I think I'd give her the gun but most riders are trying to shave ounces from the load. I'm also assuming that she's not training on her own. There will be a group of riders? Gosh. How much fear can one person have during daylight?

It isn't classified as a taser and can be purchased in most Farm and feed stores it is a battery operated Hot shot cattle prod.  Smaller sizes are used for hogs. Just because they are smaller size they still pack enough punch to put a 190 wrestler on the ground in a heart beat...
