Mountain bike?

I am looking to get a mountain bike for competition. For mountain bike trails. Under $250 is price range. I live in indiana so What brands and models would you reccomend to start off with?

Getting a good bike is going to be tough for $250. I would be looking at Felt (I have a felt, nice bikes), Specialized, Fisher/Trek, Fuji, Kona. Search Craigslist everyday.
