umptanum question.
« on: April 21, 2011, 08:12:33 PM »
anyone know why WDFW gives out over 200 cow permits for this unit every year?  Is it worth burning 4 preference points over?

Had this COW TAG in 05 and it sure made for good soup. Depends on the snow level for this area to hold lots of Elk. There are elk in there but they are few and far between until th snow hits.  Lots of land lots of places for them to hide... And it can be like living in Seattle.....

four points, sure put in for it....... :twocents:
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

It doesn't matter what you think...

It is where we hunt modern, and have seen tons of elk in there over the years. Have drawn 2 cow tags there and filled both of them. Havent ever gotten a spike out of there, but have seen them far off.
Yes, it gets busy and is a lot of land. But when the weather is right, there are TONS of elk in there. If they ever reinstate archery there again, I would hunt it for sure.  Have had just a handful of days that I never saw elk in it even when the weather is warm. Nothing like having several dozen cow elk walk right past you though when the heard is on the move.
I am thinking of the Manashtash this year though.

thanks for the info. I should have mentioned it is for muzzleloader. Usually hunt manastash archery, but the odds seem best for umptanum.

Have hunted ml 2 seasons when I drew cow tag. I filled both times. Usually hot and there are a few resident elk in small pockets

I know a lot of guys that did not fill cow  tags the past few years.

Amazing this unit is not open for archery

I hunted it a few years ago with my Grandpa during modern season he had a cow tag and filled it.  It sure was different hunting for me being an archery Guy.  When we got into the woods the Thursday morning my Grandpa filled his tag I thought I got dropped off in Iraq gun fire everywhere the elk didn't know where to go.

I am wondering if it is really busy with muzzleloader as well. Definitley like the peace and quiet of archery hunting!
