Elk Calling Seminar
«
on:
May 28, 2008, 10:10:35 PM »
Hey there folks,
I just wanted to let everyone know that I will be doing an elk calling and tactics seminar at the Federal Way Sportsman's Warehouse on July 2nd at 6:00 p.m. I will be going over elk biology, calling techniques, calling mistakes, terrain tactics, meat care, equipment, and the effects of adrenaline on the shooting system. I hope to see some of you there so I can meet some new faces and talk elk with everyone. Bring your calls, your experiences, and your questions.
Take Care,
Joel Turner

Hey Joel, I wish I were closer to your area, I'd certainly attend to hear you! I'm sure you'll do a fine job!!
Does this mean you're part of Rockies ProStaff?

Yes I am now on Rockie's pro staff. He sure is making some great new calls. Have you tried the Bully Bull tube yet?

Yes I have! It's not a bad bugle but needs some toning down. It has too much brassy/plastic resonance coming off the barrel, it needs 2-3 rubber dampeners on it it to control or tame it down some for more realistic bull tones. Too, the exhaust barrel end is too wide open for best results, the airflow escapes too quickly & easily, your airflow should stay trapped in the barrel longer for absolute best realistic resonance elk sounds. Of course once you trap or bottle these sounds before escaping then you'll notice the need for the rubber dampeners even more prevalent.
I've played around with Customizing many grunt tubes for years now including Rockies which in my opinion were the best! I still have been Customizing those for a few years now to achieve even better realistic tones. I have them on our Site so that should tell you they're pretty good! (grin)
But I have come out with two new tubes of my own now, The Chuckler & LIL Chuckler, both have the Customized design I was referring too, including restricting the barrel end with the smaller hole/holes for best performance. The larger one The Chuckler has a 3 1/4" barrel & the LIL Chuckler has a 2 1/4" barrel, both weigh in at under 6oz & can be used with flex tube with one hand operation easily, no bending when you don't want it too & bending when you do.
This larger one is good enough to win a World Championship today, it's one of the best sounding & controllable bugles you've ever heard! It will make any hunter sound better than he really is! (grin) Both Bugles have unreal tones! These Bugles are strictly Grunt Tubes, no external reeds.
You're an individual who know what it takes to sound good in Comps, I'll have to get one of these to you to test drive & see what you think yourself? (grin) By the way, I have been a judge at several of the smaller competitions so I have an idea what's a good sound to what's mediocre! Most great callers are very comparable in their use of calls, it's the tube that can give ones an edge over the others.

Wow, you guys really take this calling thing to a science. I'll try and attend the seminar and bring a couple of my calls that work, as well as a few I haven't had success with to see what I'm doing wrong... I would love to learn a mouth-reed call...

Hey fellas,
I usually do a seminar in Wenatchee every summer. I haven't got it set up yet, but I am working on it with Hooked On Toys in Wenatchee. I will try to keep you posted.
Elknut,

Elknut, I was reading through the little nickle and saw that a seminar was going on in Athol. You need to keep us informed on these things.

Joel,
Thank you for putting on the seminar last night. Excellent job...I think you just about doubled my knowledge of elk. Can't wait to get out into the field this summer/fall and try some of the stuff out that you discussed.
