Thank you.   I wondered if it was a shoveler just because of his bill and how he fed.   How about the kids flying behind him.  I thought Ringneck, but then again I don't see a ring.LOL

Those are Ring-Necked.

Most of the time, unless you are right on top of them or holding them in your hand, it is hard to see the ring.

Doug, are those recent? I see a bunch every year by my place, but they have been gone for about a month now. Just curious.

Nice pictures by the way.  I've taken a couple hen shovlers but a drake is definetly on my top 5 "need to bag one list"

Those divers are not ringnecks they are scaup aka bluebill.

Noticed that, too - white patch on the front of the face on the hen and the bright blue bill with no white "outlines" on the drakes give it away. Managed to get a few last season year and they sure are a pretty bird.

I'm curious if they are greater or lesser too, though. Any tips from experience telling them apart?
Everyone shoots three times per bird, right?

It's pretty tough for me to tell them apart, size is the main difference, I believe the greaters tend to have a more greenish head while the lessers tend to have more of a purpleish tint to the head feathers but it's not consistant so size is the only determining factor.   :dunno:

I would guess that they are lessers. Hard to say unless I was holding one though.
