Late season
« on: April 25, 2011, 10:33:16 AM »
I can only hunt the the end of may this year. Anyone had the opportunity to hunt the last 2 weeks (May 20 - 31) of the season in previous years (Pend Oreille co ) and how was the activity?

Usually tough. Birds are done doing their thing and have heard every call out there. With the way the weather has been this year who knows how it will be, especially if you have private land where the birds have not been called a lot. Went out for the opener and did fairly well. Going back this weekend with the brother in law and nephews.

Late hunting has pro's and con's.  con's are;birds are usually very quiet, birds are usually very "educated" and perhaps the worst is visibility-brush and trees are leaved out and makes it much easier for them to stay hidden. Pro's are:  very few other hunters, weather is usually much nicer and it's just a d_-- good excuse to be out in the spring.  I've taken birds that late and considering the year, they may well be still talking.  Try to get out before daylight and get them located on the roost and then stick around that area until mid day-might get lucky and find a hot one gobbling late morning or early afternoon.  I hear them around my cabin that late in the year quite frequently and often times they don't start until noon or 1:00 pm.

Thanks for the inputs. I'll be hunting on my property and the birds will have for the most part not have been hunted. I'll hope to find a lonely talkative bird and see what happens. Best of luck for the rest of your season. Hope that a few of these are still around (picture taken last November)

Since they don't talk as much and are quieter, your calling should be the same.  Maybe even use a call that's a little different from the normal boxes, pot calls, and mouth diaphragms such as a wing bone or a tube call.

Every year is different in what turkeys are doing ...last few years we have seriously put the hurt on them the last part of the season ... thats why i have not even got excited yet...yeah sometimes they are harder to find because they have been called to - shot at-  ran down with trucks or whatever other way imaginable but when you find them and get close to them its madness !!!!! JUST HUNT ....
