Free turkey hunt!
« on: April 28, 2011, 07:42:42 AM »
:chuckle: Ok, not what you think. Well, it could be. So last year during Easter, some of my family thought it would be funny to give my kids or what I refer to as "dump off" baby chicks for my kids. $$$ later I have a nicely custom built chicken coop and a quaint sized run for my 5 chickens. So this year, they're  not so amusing tradition continued as they brought 2 turkey chicks for my kids. Not happening. I come up with this BS story how they will kill the chickens yadda yadda yadda. My story was sounding good until I got called out. My wife was all excited until I mentioned they are for EATING for Thanksgiving. Unless I bring it home already dead, its automatically a family pet :bash: So I'm offering these 2 Tom turkey chicks for FREE to anyone who wants them. I'm in Gig Harbor. My wife put the message out on her FaceSpace page so there are already a few tire kickers but no definite takers. Whoever wants em, I'll meet up at the Safeway parking lot right off of Hwy. 16 in GH. They come with some feed, a nice sized brood and a heat lamp. Anyone?

Throw in a custom built coop and I may  be interested :chuckle:
You should return the favor to these family members. Maybe a cute little bunny or a small little rottweiler pup at their next visit :chuckle:

Wow! They went quick! So far they are spoken for...
No kidding quadrafire. So far out of the six grandkids all from they're mid 20's to 30, My sister and I are the only ones who are married and have kids. My cousin who resembles "The Forty Year Old Virgin" who knows if he will ever hook up let alone have kids someday. I'm crossing my fingers. I'll show up with a couple ferrets in a cardboard box with a two day supply of food and a heatlamp! :chuckle:

We had a broad-breasted bronze hen turkey that in one year layed 106 eggs which are the size of two chicken eggs in an omelette.

It is definitely not economical to raise a turkey to eat, unless they can free range and find 90% of their own food.

Yeah that was what my aunt was suggesting.
"Just free range them."
No, how about you let a couple big ass turkeys run free in your yard if it sounds that easy! :chuckle: She had no comment.

You might think wild toms gobble loudly, well my daughter raised some and when they discovered their voices you could hear them a half mile away.  They gobbled at any noise or just to out-do each other.  They'd start before dawn until after dark.  No quiet time!  She finally sold them.

Actually ferrets can be fun.  Fairly quiet, too.

Yuch, ferrets can be pretty stinky.

If you have hens yelping from your pen, it can also attract any local gobblers.  This picture is from two springs ago.   :chuckle:

Growing up we had a chicken hen get broody.  My great uncle had turkeys.  We brought home 4 eggs and threw them under the hen.  It was all she could do the cover them up.  3 of the 4 hatched.  They were promptly named, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.  Was pretty funny after about 6 weeks watching the hen and chicks interact when they were as big as she was.  They sure were tasty.

My yard on Decatur Island.  Funny thing was, I had an unnotched tag in my vest and it was during season.  We free range the birds so we did catch him mating with her a couple times.  We tried incubating some eggs after but no luck.  He had another hen he was hanging out with so we decided not to off him.  She popped out six or so younguns on the neighbor's property.
