Set out my first bait
« on: May 05, 2011, 08:35:27 AM »
Worked my tail off last night getting my first bait of the year in.  Nice thing is I had this spot in mind, had scouted it day before yesterday and went back to bait it last night.  I get about 600 yards from the bait and see my first bear of the year.  Nice fat, great looking hide, 120 to 130 pound bear.  Nice brown coat with some blond in it.  I doubt I would shoot it, but nice to know I'm in the right area.  Packed in about 75 pounds of bait sweet COB and 5 gallons of used peanut oil from my turkey fryer.  I'll go back Friday afternoon, pack in some more bait and set up the trail camera.  I'm only going to have about 7 days to hunt this spot so hopefully it won't take them long to find it.  The calves and back were singing on the drive home last night.  :)

I'm the exact same way, more fun to watch then anything.  I had a bear one time lay on his belly, arms at his side, nose in a butter container which was full of bacon grease.  The bear scooted across the ground like an inch worm licking the grease off.  Just used his back legs to scoot along.  Absolutely hilarious!!!   :chuckle:

I'm confused...the regs (washington): Hunting Method: Any legal weapon used during the modern firearm, archery, or muzzleloader seasons can be used for
spring black bear hunts. Bait or hounds are not allowed for bear hunting (RCW 77.15.245).  :dunno:

Went back last night, no takers.  I added some bacon spray scent from Bear Scents, whew that stuff is aromatic.  Saw a turkey, two moose and a heck of alot of deer.  Yotes were singing good as well.  Set up my trail camera, so (fingers crossed) hopefully have a few good photos to share soon.

i dont know if you use this but when ever we were starting up a bait site we would get anise oil and fling it all over the place as we were getn ready to leave, its never taken more than 3 days to get hit, or even vannila extract would work, you can get either one at the dollar store, that way it doesnt cost a fortune

I actually have a scent ball from Bear Scents that is Anise, but I was waiting to use it in another unit.  This unit closes for spring bear on May 15th, so I am not that worried if it gets hit or not.  Its close and the snow this year is unreal.  I went over to my property near Saint Maries, ID and it's still crotch deep.  My place is at the 3800 foot level and I couldn't get within half mile of it.  Deep snow.  I have some units in Idaho that don't close until 30 Jun, those are the ones I will be concentrating on soon.  Probably going to need a sled to set out baits over there though.  Thanks for the advice though!!

So in the pouring rain yesterday I went in to pull my trail camera and see if anything had found my bait site yet.  Yesterday was the last day for this unit and up to this point the bait had not been touched.  I haven't been back since last Weds.  This bait was close to home and I wasn't putting in alot of hard effort, more fun then anything.  Anyways I get there around 5 pm and it is just raining dogs and cats, get down to my bait and the area is just destroyed!!  Every single piece of bait is gone, 110 pounds of sweet COB and 50 pounds of meat, gone!!  Nice big piles of bear scat all around with COB in it.  I sat on the bait almost until dark and just got soaked, nothing showed.  So I pull my trail camera and drive home in excitment to see what did all the damage.   Not one single photo, trail camera did not work.   :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:   Son of a ............  So I will return to this spot this fall and see if I can get this bear(s) to return.  Going to start baiting farther east by the end of the month, hopefully I can get back into some units once the snow receds a bit more.  And figure out why my homebrew did not operate properly.

Maybe this fall show us a few pics of your bait site. I always like seeing how people set up as well as the results they get.
