Old Man and the Lake
« on: May 08, 2011, 02:29:00 PM »
Was a nice day to fish on Saturday. I know this isn't Bone or Grandpas quality but I am slowly learning LOL...

You actually have a good eye for color and lighting in this shot.  Your weakness here is composition.  Start looking at lots of landscape photographs on line and you will see that the really great photographers all follow a few simple rules.  One is almost never center your subject.  Two is hake water horizons like the opposite shore horizontal. Unless you have such an angle that they clearly aren't.  Here are a couple of options to think about.

Wapiti it is funny you say something about the rule of keeping the subject off center. I had one liked on my camera that was off centered and accidentally deleted it  :'( .

Thanks for the tip on the water horizons that does make sense to me because it seems you see MORE of the subject and its setting.

Also thank you for the kind words as it helps me know I am on the right track.

Malottguy,
Your photo is actually a Wonderful photo with just a couple of minor flaws that Wapati pointed out! It is nice enough that I would like to ask you for permission to save it to my computer as wallpaper (if you don't mind).

One rule I would like to add that I have made up for myself and my Grandkids:
Never, Ever Compare your photos to Anyone Else or Degrade your own photos! You Are The Photographer and You Are Taking The Photo of The Subject That Pleases You! Therefore Your Photo IS THE BEST PHOTO IN THE WORLD!

Keep up the wonderful work!

Dick you are more than welcome to use it and also thank you for reminding me that I shouldn't compare my photos to others. My Dad ALWAYS told that same thing when I would do a drawing or carvings.

I am finding taking pictures is becoming an addictive past time. I go fishing often and if the camera is not with me I almost ( well I do ) panic ha ha. I actually bought the camera for my wife as she is the true photographer in the family, but I have shot a few thousand more photos than her ha ha.

Again thanks for the advice and compliments.

Robert
