This is the problem with your tacoma's mileage, try driving it like you like the truck instead of like you stole it!

yajsab If its a diesel than i wouldn't! I have often wondered about that engine. If it has the same kind of diesel as the airconditioner for the reefer trailers. I need to spend some timeand see what the tranny combo those pups made, because i sure would like to b=put a little diesel in a jeep, or small truck.  What vintage is your pup? Found any good sites that share info?

Unfortunately, I have the gas version.  But according to my calculation, I get about 20 mpg with the 32" tires.  I only used about 1 tank of gas round trip for hunting, so I don't know if I need to switch.

Mine is a 1989 and a friend has a 1991 with the same 2.6l engine.

We usually drive my 94 toyota 4x4 with the 3ltr v6 that gets around 15-16 mpgs. Thinking about driving my commuter more though. Its a 96 2wd sidekick that gets around 35mpg and either towing a small utility trailer or getting one of those hitch carrier platforms.

If you want a toyota find a rig with a 22re. I had a 86 4 runner. I loved that thing. wish I never sold it. Got between 25 and 30 depending on how I had my tires inflated.

The barrel price of crude has is trading down 20% to $98 from just a week ago at $115. Gasoline use in the US has dropped almost 10% from 6 months ago and OPEC is losing it's mind. BP stock fell 2.5% yesterday, as did all of the other oil companies. The crude price has been very inflated because of speculators and is now adjusting to match true cost. We should see crude continue to fall to as low as $70, possibly within two months. The one mitigating factor in this is if OPEC decides to leave the US dollar. Oil prices will drop worldwide, but our inflation at that point will be so drastic that everything will go up, including oil. This is a real concern.

prices at the pump probly wont drop that much tho, $70 a barrel just means more of a profit per gallon for fuel companies and they name the price of what they are going to pay, a huge part of oil prices here goes off what the dollar is worth and its devalues more every day which means the less the dollar is worth the more a barrel cost, oil isnt worth any more than it has been it just takes more american dollars to buy it now

dont buy a tacoma to save gas. I have a 96 with a 4cyl 2.7 liter and get 15 in town and 18 on the hwy.

My 3.4l equipped 98' gets 15mpg in 4wd driving just around town in the snow. Something is either wrong with yours or you are driving it pretty aggressively.

As far as the older Subies getting better mileage goes, it's due to that old 1.8l motor that didn't make any power! The later ones still get 25+ but they have some real balls, the older ones make me want to get out and push on hills...

There is nothing wrong with Jmoyer's truck. I have a 96' Tacoma 2.7L 5speed manual 4x4 and I only average 18-19mpg city and highway combined.

The new 2011 model for this same truck is only rated 18 in town and 20 highway. The 4.0L V6 5Speed manual 4x4 is 14/18 and that is straight from Toyota's website...

I've had a '02 Tacoma, xtra cab, w/ 3.4, and got about 15-19 mpg.  My 91 with the 22re got the same.  Some days you would get very low 20's... But the stars had to align just right!  Worse I got with the 02 was when pulling my sled, got 11 mpg....

There is nothing wrong with Jmoyer's truck. I have a 96' Tacoma 2.7L 5speed manual 4x4 and I only average 18-19mpg city and highway combined.

He already complained that he had to run the motor at 5k in 3rd gear to maintain 60mph on hills...I am betting if he didn't drive it like he stole it that a noticeable improvement in mileage would be attained.

Matt and I were just up in BC doing some bear hunting and the first guide we were with had Geo Trackers for his hunting rigs. I never would have picked them as hunting vehicles, but with a little lift and some gnarly tires they went EVERYWHERE. Its pretty much like an ATV with 4 doors and a heater. And we'd go through maybe 5 gallons of gas in an 8 to 10 hour hunting day. Just something to think about... Your buddies might give you some crap when you roll up in one, but they won't when you bomb up some tiny skid trail their Super Duty can't fit on

I know more than 1 person that has traded their 4x4 truck for a hunting rig that is outside of the box. Subaru, Geo tracker, Mits Montoya, they might not make your rooster feel big but they get the job done and haul you and your animal for half the cost of most full size rigs... I wish i could afford to donate a bunch of $$$ to the oil companies  to dive a fuel guzzler, but not anymore!
