Reporting a banded Trumpeter Swan
« on: March 11, 2011, 07:51:36 PM »

I meant collared Trumpeter swan  :chuckle:

point and shoot camera held up to my spotting scope:

But he did have a leg band also,  Jeff Foiles woulda pellet gunned him.  :o

You can't see it in the picture but the collar had yellow vertical lettering that read  M 5 0

Has anyone ever reported a collared bird sighting?  I'd heard of them but never seen one till this morning, he was out in the field infront of my house so I got online and found the website to report collars is the same as the bird band website.   http://www.reportband.gov/  so it looks like I'm going to get the same certificate as they send you for reporting a leg band.  I thought it's kinda cool. so far all I've got is a conformation E-mail but it doesn't tell me anything about the bird other than what I entered.

   Kind of Bird: Swan
Marker Reference ID: 6425 (BBL internal sequence number)
    Marker Info:
Neck collar: M50 Yellow on Red
How Obtained: Sighting of live bird
Status of Band: Left on Bird
    Status of Bird: Alive
We will be able to match the marker to an individual bird (by leg band number), and enter your sighting information into our database, producing a certificate that will give you all the banding information along with your sighting information

Just thought I'd share.

I will let ya know, I reported it as yellow lettering on red because thats what color it was when I saw it.  I would think white letters would be yellow after 10 years on a swans neck though.

Very old bird.  I know snow geese go upwards of 26 years I wonder what the life span on a swan is?

I guess they can live up to 30 years.
