Widgeon Decoys!
« on: May 17, 2011, 12:18:00 AM »
Hello everyone!

My first post on the site yet I have been a long time prowler, finally decided to join.

my question is I bought 6 widgeon decoys from GHG and I have two dozen Dakota mallards.
I was thinking about running my mallards in a  regular spread and then adding the half a doz widgeon off to the side mingling with my spread. I hunt alot of widgeons and Mallards where I hunt and was wondering if this is a good idea (especially late season) to help attract more birds for this coming year. Just thinking about stratigies and going over previous hunts till this year starts!!!

Any tips, experiences, stories, WELL APPRECIATED!!!

Thank you! :hello:

Waterfowler62, welcome to the site!

The more dekes the merrier in my opinion....  I prefer to add some divers near my mallards....  We get Widgeon dropping in no matter what I put out it seems..... Good luck!

Welcome.
The wigeon typically will land in the mallard spread.  We get fairly large flocks of wigeon that come in and they seem to canvas our spread.  Unlike teal where they will come over quick and then drop right into the teal decoys.  I do tend to gap my wigeon and work them over towards the grass lines of flooded ponds, fields etc. as that is where they seem to sit.  I will run up to 4 dozen wigeon decoys later in the season when the wigeon show up in larger numbers.

Seems like i had the right idea then, thank you! was just wondering if it was a good bird to but out in the spread to catch the eye of other species and its own.  8)

Welcome to the site 62.  I use Widgeon decoys all the time even though they will land w/mallards. Most ducks will land with their own kind more readily than other species. Sort of match the hatch.

they were mostly bought to add verity to my spread, cause without them i have had widgeon land just with my mallards. I was just thinking if it would help seeing two different species would help other birds (teal, pinners ect.) have a litte more confidence when thinking about landing.

In 30 years of hunting ducks I have never seen real ducks land segregated by species.  Also they do not sit in the decoy spread shapes you see in the 'how to' books and magazines.

Watch the real ducks.  They will teach you how to hunt.

I have mallards, teal, gadwall, widgeon and pintail decoys. The teal love diving in with teal decoys. Works amazing. Widgeon and gadwall don't seem to care. Pintail seem to work. And geese seem to like pintail decoys. They always land with them. I don't know why.
