spring or fall bear for eating
« on: May 19, 2011, 04:26:11 PM »
I understand that spring bears have a better coat but am wondering about how you feel about the taste. i have heard all my life about how bad bear tastes & its only good for sausage ect.. but i got a bear a couple years back & it tasted great. my sons gal friend who doesnt like meat in general ate some(of course i made her try it) loved it & asks when i'll get another. everyone that tried it liked it. anyway i was wondering if everyone going for spring bear is in it for the meat or the hide.( i understand about the just getting out & hunting part but im talking about the edible part)

Those 3ft milk drinkers in the spring should be the best... :chuckle:
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

I'll take one of each please. I've only shot three but I'm really beginning to like bear a lot. Spring or fall is good they are just much much leaner in the spring if you dont like the fat. I do, the last two were fall bears and I enjoyed them thoroughly

You really need to trim off all the fat you can on a bear.

A spring bear gets 5% beef suet and a fall bear none when I get one; both turn out excellent hamburger!  I don't think I could say one is better than the other.
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

We've killed and eaten a few of both and I can't say one is better than the other. As a matter of fact my 2005 spring bear had more fat on it than any other fall bear I have ever seen and it was fine.

Both are great in my book.

My sisters say so long as they arent eating fish they are good....fish eating bears...in Alaska apparently.... are nasty, they would know they lived there and ate a bunch of bear way more than me anyway...
