Can't get the hang of it.
« on: May 22, 2011, 11:02:28 AM »
I have a Foxpro, Jack in the Box, mouth calls, full camo, scent killer. I've tried all kinds of different combos with my gear. Any suggestions? Maybe I should just sit over bait. Does anybody use a dog decoy, and how do you set it up. Maybe I'm not calling right. Anybody want to give up some info??

Scouting.  Gotta find out where they are.  Cold calling can work but its better if you know there are coyotes in the area.  After that it is just how you set up and how still you can sit.  I think I made around 20-25 stands before I called one in.  That is about how many stand I do between call in also.  The eastern guys are doing good with a call in every 5 stands but here in the western side it is MUCH harder.

To learn how to call yotes takes a lot of time and Patience's. A lot of guys buy all the stuff spend a few days calling and don't see a yote, then hang up there gear. Even pro's go days without calling yotes in on there stands. When I was calling a lot more I averaged seeing a yote on a stand about 1:6 stands. I spend between 20-45mins on most yote stands. Most times closer to the the 45min mark. But if the wind is screaming, I call for less time because the sound won't cover that big of area. The fall months are always the best for me sep-oct. Just keep working at it and you will find some luck!

Maybe your area has been hit hard by other coyote hunters, the coyotes might be trained already. Where are you hunting at or near ?
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

I know i've been hunting where alot of other hunters hunt. Its hard to find places to go where every tom, dick, and harry, haven't been. I hunt western washington, but i think i'm going to head east. My inlaws have a house on alta lake golf course in pateros, and a couple houses on lake chelan, just north of chelan.

Also, just because you dont see anything, doesnt mean you didnt call something in....

For example, yesterday I was bear calling for my bro a clear cut huge gulley, surrounded by trees. About 2 ridgelines away, (700 yards or more I would guess) a coyote comes bookin down a small visible "S" curve in the road.....
Books up a bank, pauses, books back down to the road, runs 20 yards back and forth, and finally dives off the edge into the trees, coming in to us....(he was trying to figure out how to get on down to us)

Point being...I was so intent on calling and watching the immediate clear cut tree line...without my bro pointing out the yote, I would have missed seeing it and thought nothing came in...when in fact, something did.

Another suggestion, lose the scent killer and learn to use the wind and terrain to hide your scent from a coyote.  If you think scent killer will hide your scent from a coyote, YOU LOSE.  The only way a coyote will not smell you is if he never gets in your scent cone.  I will even call down wind if I know that the terrain will allow me to see a coyote before he reaches my scent cone.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

A couple of things I have learned is that it is very hard to get a coyote to break cover and come out into the open on the west side.  I have started going into the heavy cover and calling small openings.  I try to put the down wind side towards a road or clear cut.  The coyotes dont like to go into the open even to get downwind.

There is lots for them to eat, especially this time of year.  They will eat anything like insects, grass, fruits, nuts and berries and all the mice, moles, rabbits, grouse, and deer are dropping babies all over the place.  They are just not as hungry as they are late fall and winter.

There are so many factors that can make a difference.  Educated dogs, what sounds you use, how loud, how long, how far, will a decoy help or hurt and so on.  Just have fun with it.  It is sooo worth it when you get your first one to come in.
