A black mallard hen. These are not cross-breeds, this is a true genetically pure strain of mallard, similar to an albino of any species.

Wow! a melanistic mallard,very rare,never seen one before but did have a shot at a melanistic pheasant one time.

Very cool find and great picture. There is black drake that lives at Klinline pond here in Vancouver. I dont know if it is a true melanistic because it still had a green head.
