Boresighting
« on: May 24, 2011, 03:40:44 PM »
I am curious what the rest of you recommend using for boresighting your rifles?  I notice there are many different styles of sights ( lasers, magnetic, ect).  These all seem to better then the old looking down the barrel method.  What are your thoughts?  Thanks

I use a laser I got from Cabellas.  It has a number of adapters and you just turn it on and slide it down the muzzle, then twist it a bit and it locks in place.  Works on everything from .22 to 12 gauge and it was pretty cheap.

It's good enough to get you on the paper at 50 yards and then you can take it from there.

There's other ones that you basically load into the chamber like a cartridge but they seemed to be a bit more caliber specific.

I'd agree that any of them are better than looking down the barrel...

For my bolt actions that are scoped, I just use the rifle.  I take the bolt out, site through the barrel at an object about 200 yrds away and them adjust scope so it is in the same spot.  Just did it with my A-bolt 300WSM and was within 3 inches of the bulls-eye at 50 yrds.

I have a laser boresighter but only use it for rifles that I can't pull the bolt.  Even those I'm starting to just put out a 4' square of paper at 25yrds it's just easier.

Remove the bolt, sight thru the bore as if it were peep sights. Center your bullseye in the bore on a 25yd target. Adjust accordingly. This will put you very close at 100yds.
Oh yeah, put the bolt back in for the rest of your sighting in, LOL.

I have used this method before but now use a laser and they have worked great.

Buy a cartridge laser that you can chamber (obviously the same caliber you shoot, LOL) they are allot more accurate then the lasers that go in the end of the barrel, and you do not have to worry if it gets knocked off center.

Get a leupold zero point...

It is quick and easy to use. Will get you on paper real quick.

I own the Cabelas one that goes in your muzzle and it works but can be hard to see the red laser sometimes.

I use the leupold bore sighter.  It is magic as far as I am concerned-I have no idea how it works, but it does.

When I get to the range, I pull the bolt and double check the boresighters work by looking downthe bore (if possible).

Side note:  the laser bore sighters are GREAT to use to set up a chrony.  Takes all of 3 minutes to set up and I have yet to shoot the chrony so I guess it works!
-Aim the rifle at the target
-Pull the bolt and/or insert chamber flag (for safety) - I also hang something on the trigger so I don't forget the laser is in the bore...
-during a cease fire I go down range and line the laser beam up on my chest and center it over sensors.  I also adjust it so that it is level to the bore by making sure the laser passes at the same height over both sensors...
-Done.

Oh yeah... don't forget pull the bore sighter from the bore before you shoot!  Never good to turn a nice rifle into a banana!
