Cosmopolis poacher pleads guilty

OLYMPIA - A Cosmopolis man has been fined and has lost his hunting privileges for two years, after pleading guilty to illegally killing a large, four-point blacktail deer.

Danny W. Bonnell of Cosmopolis pleaded guilty April 9 in Grays Harbor District Court to second-degree unlawful hunting and making a false statement to a public official. He was fined $2,700 and sentenced to two years’ probation. In May, his hunting privileges were revoked for two years, and yesterday he paid a $3,000 fee for the return of his hunting rifle seized during the poaching investigation.

The sentence follows an investigation over several years by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) officers, spurred by a citizen tip. Officers with search warrants seized a crossbow, all-terrain vehicle and hunting equipment from Bonnell’s residence and a second residence.  The deer antlers and skull, as well as a black bear hide, also were confiscated.

Citizen witnesses were key to the successful investigation and prosecution of the case, WDFW enforcement officers said. The deer illegally killed in 2004 was frequently seen in Cosmopolis, and was enjoyed by a number of local wildlife viewers, said WDFW Officer Danyl Klump.

"It’s encouraging to see members of the community step forward and turn in this illegal hunter, because he took something that belongs to all of us," Klump said.

"We rely on information from law-abiding hunters and others recreating outdoors to apprehend poachers," said WDFW Deputy Enforcement Chief Mike Cenci.

Individuals with information on poaching violations are encouraged to call 1-877 WDFW TIP (877-933-9847) or a WDFW regional office. The identity of reporting parties is kept confidential, said Cenci.  Rewards are offered for tips leading to arrests.

To me there are two types of poachers horn hunters and dumb fu*ks that kill Sh*t for fun! Then there are people in need that may not afford food and such and poach for meat and only take what is needed. For it is not in them to go down to the well fare office and apply for government food stamps like well fare hood rats! The only reason why we take poaching seriously is of the dumb fu*ks that ruin hunting for everyone and that's why we have seasons and such! It's funny white man came to America and killed everything he saw and was greedy as hell. That was the nature of the westernization culture and still is so today because of European descendants that were under that rule! To me if you shoot a animal and eat it big *censored* if you kill it for any other reason your a poacher!

White man noticed how they were so greedy that they had to control it and applied hunting regulation funny that!

And for you that say Natives kill everthing they see not true but they to have adopted to the o might westernization culture!

Fu*k the westernization culture!

2 years is not enough for someone that was intentionally taking more than one animal (bear too) obviously they probably have taken more than that  :twocents:

remember alot of our fore fathers were poachers. Sure times have changed and it is not necessary now but there was a time. I know most are too young to have known what it was like in the depression. Things here in the lower 48 are not the same as Alaska where people poach or live on subsistance. But down here there is not the need for poaching.

You could get your point across just as well without all the F-Bombs, Dude.  We let our kids on this site.  I for one would appreciate a little candor in the language department.  Not being a prude, but do not want to explain to my kids what the word is just yet.........  :twocents:
