Anyone have any experience hunting Roosevelts over a wallow?

Any pics of a Roosie wallow?

I've never found one before nor have I ever seen any of the bulls in the area I hunt with mudded up.

Seriousely, are you just joking or seriouse. Ive found plenty of Roosie wallows and that is west of I-5 Roosies. One small patch of timber had 2 wallows right in the creek drainage. I have watched bulls wallow along tha swamps and be completely covered from the antler tips to there hooves. I cant even count how many Roosie wallows I have found. Sounds like you might need to get off the ridge tops and into the jungle

Yep,  they definitely wallow,  the thing is they have so many wallows to choose from that they won't use one more than the other so you can tell by the signs of activity rather than the smell of elk many times.  These elk live where the next spot to wallow is just around the next corner.

I harvested a bull that had just stepped out of his wallow which was deep in the Western WA jungle. This was a wallow that was in deep cool timber and was probably no more than 100 yards from a creek with plenty of water in it. Demonstrates (i think) that wallows aren't just for cooling off, but are also integral to the rut ritual. I have no pics of it though, sorry.

In the area I now hunt, I was driving from my camp to my hunting area for a little scouting (August) and saw a large dark blob and scattered mud all over road, stopped to investigate, and there were Elk tracks showing where an elk had crossed the road, mud dripping off of him.
upon further investigation, I found a wallow down near the bottom of the little drainage, but was no longer in use when I hunted there in Sept. (but could have been because it rained most the time I was there...)

Depends on were you are hunting but, not to be a but head, I think you need to cover more ground and you will find them.  Bulls just love a good mud bath and they sure thing they are hot stuff with a thick coat of mud.

Roosevelt's use wallows regularly.  Most of the time I do not concentrate my efforts at wallows though, because there are so many of them.  They are also usually near their bedding area and I don't want to blow them out.

I usually hunt them near their feeding area or try and intercept them between their feeding and bedding areas.

Really, Seriousely ! What the heck was bad about my post. I gave you an answer. Thicker skin may help and dont take stuff as being negative. I cant help it if I know nothing about you, all I know is you road hunt .

  Bulls will wallow where is is wet , muddy, water seeps, sawmpy areas. They can be on hill sides even not nessecarily in the bottoms. If you want to see some easy wallow and get to understand where they are being used and when , head down to St Hellens and go into the Margret and hike some of the hill sides, when you come out into some of them open meadows start looking around, if it is marshy or wet  at all there is more than likely a wallow close. If you cover ground you should find 15 wallows or better.

Thanks for the info fellas I really do appreciate it, I think maybe I need to look for wallows in August because by sept all I've found is muddy water holes, without dished out sides just water holes.

What?!  It was an example.I wasnt saying you are a road hunter,  I use roads all the time, I could care less if a guy road hunts anyway. In fact I enjoy a nice day road hunting every now and again, to me its stiull hunting, I dont care what other think.
   I think this is another example where a guy is reading the words (that is you) that are being typed (by Me)  as they are not intended. I am not attacking you or trying to down grade. I was not saying you are a road hunter, I was saying that I know nothing about you at all, I know nothing about the way you hunt. Damn dude your making me out to be a piece of crap. Thanks I really appreciate that.  No really thanks for tarnishing my immage forever  And just because I feel like I must spell it out for you , IM JUST KIDDING 

  ANyway here is a couple pictures of some wallows that are in a "convergance" area. Its a spot where the elk will move through all the time betweek 4 ridges that converge together at the bottom end, usually being hit at night. There is a few main elk trails comming down through this spot. I dont hunt wallows but do know a few guys that have killed bulls from tree stands off of wallows on the wet side. I have seen wallows being used clear through november and as early as July. Thats on the wet side. These pics are actually from the east side as I never took pics on the wet side.
    Seriousely if you want to go look at wallows I may be able to get free for a day and take you too some this summer.

If you want to hunt them hunt them. Me personally , no I wouldnt waist my time on a wallow.

Bucklucky, yes I guess I missread what your intentions were. It just seemed to me like you were jumping to a conclusion assuming that I dont get down in the nasty thick stuff. I was just a little annoyed after not finding any wallows last yeat or the year before b/c my plan was to hang a tree stand but from the sounds of it from you guys who know what your doing the wallow may not be the best place to post up. Sounds like it could be at certain times but it needs to be played by ear depending on the mood of the elk.

Bulls are going to be where the cows are around rut time.  If you locate a few wallows they are definitely worth checking out.  If a bull has been there you can get on his tracks.  If you focus all your efforts on the wallow(s) you are limiting your chances.  My  is: 1) Make sure there is elk in the area you want to hunt. 2) get to know the area you are going to hunt so scout , scout, & scout. 3) Shooting, Practice, Practice, & Practice. 4) Cover ground to locate elk.

As the mud drys out they stay cool longer.
