Scout often, hunt hard, pray for some weather, post all the great pictures of the hunt and the success .

Birdguy have you hunted here before? Is there a lot of public land? I already have a couple scouting trips planned.

Really :yike:

Its national forest man, one side borders the wilderness.  Weather is gonna be your enemy, if the snow comes hard, your not getting in very far.  Its in the blue mountains, that might help you get your bearings. Its not a place I would want have a tag for if I have never even been there, that said good luck.  There are bucks in there, but it is rough, steep country.  Lots of glassing and scouting and finding where the deer hang out.  The plus is that its during the rut, that's when you will have the best chance to see a deer.
Take the mountain road all the way up to the start of the GMU and start glassing and taking side roads and looking for spots.  I would also come in from the bottom route and scout there because that might be all you can hunt if it snows. Hope that helps.

Tough hunt for muleys, but you might find a big whitey (actually, you COULD find a muley-just much less likely).  I don't know 172 very well, we spend most of our time in 154 and 162... :dunno:

The season is September 24 to October 9. I don't think too much snow is going to be a problem.

If those are the dates you wont have too much of an issue with snow-Let me rephrase that, you wont get snowed out.  It could be cold as hell and snow a little but thats highly unlikely.  It is steep and nasty.  Very few deer but there are some mashers.  keep us posted and Good Luck!

Some big bucks down in the big hole (menatchee Creek)  More deer down at the grande ronde.  Mostly private land.  You might check into hunting some of the state land across the river.  Likely not much competition.  the ranchers down there think they own the roads, so drive careful. 4/0 guys are a bunch of jerks.  If I had a tag, I'd hunt the edge of the national forest, or the state land along the river.

I drew the late season Lick Creek modern rifle tag.  I'm going to hold out for a big'un.  Of course, i did that with my any bull archery tag last year and came home empty handed, well, no elk anyhow.  A nice tasty young bear, some great pics, and one day four spikes in the waterhole.  Missed a huge six point.  If someone comes up with a shed with a broadhead in it, I'd like a picture.

Bring your legs with you. You'll need them.
Pretty sure that's a new permit in the last couple years so finding pics of harvested deer will be tough. I don't think there's any towns there either.

I apologiez I thought I was the late rifle tag, you should be fine on the snow situation.

But really, are there towns here?! What led you to pick this hunt?  I would find some private land down low if you have never been there, the mountains got their on way pilgrim. ; )

Well the reason i drew the tag is bc i messed up i should of double checked everything but i didnt. Im just trying to make the most out of the tag. I guess i will see what happens. There has to be deer there if they have a permit hunt there.
