goin east for the weekend, what flies should i take?
« on: June 17, 2011, 01:26:10 AM »
i had my freshwater/lake/river flybox swiped by some POS when i was in Yosemite last month... so, now all i have are saltwater and steelhead/salmon flies....

im going east for the weekend, and im gonna bring my fly rod.... i put together a small fly box today that consists of 3 colors of wolly buggers, royal coachmans, hoppers, ants, gnats, and 3 colors of elk hair cadis flys, san juan worms, and mosquitos....

its pretty basic, but, those are my most productive patterns.....

what would you guys take?
catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.
Forget the bear spray, use wasp killer. Concentrated delivery stream, 10X the product, and only $3.00 on sale.

I smoke two fish in the morning, I smoke two fish at night, I smoke two fish in de afternoon makes me feel alright

I have about 15 fly boxes full of lots of different flies for lots of different applications. Where are you going? Lakes or rivers? Both?

It's too early for hoppers IMO and  I wouldn't worry about multiple colors of EHC's...it's more a silhouette thing than a color thing. If the caddis hatch and the size is right, you'd be right on with this choice.
Right now I wouldn't fish any rivers without caddis nymphs. The mothers day caddis hatch was epic this year on the Yakima. Last weekend on the Cedar the caddis nymphs were the ticket.

I'd have the woolly buggers but I'd probably only worry about olive color and size 6-8. I'd have some parachute adams 12-14, the ehc's you have already, san juan worms are good for lakes.
Tell us where you want to fish and then we can tell you more. I'd freak out in cold sweats if I was only bringing 1 small box of flies. It's the gear whore in me.  :chuckle:

I tie a trailing shuck. Caddis that is dynamite. Big nymphs always do it.
